Here are five helpful yarn storage ideas you’ll appreciate! This comes from someone who is constantly organizing yarn!
I’ve needed to organize my yarn habit for a while now. I had two tubs, an ottoman and two tote bag stuffed with skeins. At first I thought I’d just crochet it all away, but I realized that the more I crochet, the yarn I buy!
Time to make a plan!
If you’re a yarn lover, you know how quickly skeins, hanks, and balls of yarn can take over your space! Keeping your yarn stash organized not only helps you find what you need but also keeps your fibers in great condition. Here are five creative ways to store your yarn stash so it stays neat, accessible, and inspiring.
If you want to see your entire stash at a glance, clear plastic bins are your best friend. Stackable and airtight, they protect your yarn from dust, moisture, and pests while making it easy to find what you need. Try organizing by color, fiber, or weight to keep things even more efficient!
Turn your yarn stash into a work of art by storing it on bookshelves or in cube organizers. This method works best for those who like to keep their yarn visible and within reach. Use decorative baskets or fabric bins within the shelves for a tidy and colorful look. Bonus: It doubles as decor for your craft space!
If you’re short on space, a hanging shoe organizer on the back of a door can be a genius storage solution. Each pocket can hold a skein or two, keeping them organized without taking up valuable shelf or drawer space. This is a great option for small apartments or craft rooms with limited storage.
I use this cabinet to keep my yarn sorted by color, that I can search through for the thickness and texture I need for a project.
Perfect for holding bins of sorted colors, specialty yarns and tools. I bought it at a home improvement store and painted the outside. Sand it down first so the paint will grip!
For a rustic or vintage-inspired look, try using large glass jars, woven baskets, or even wire bins to hold your yarn. These storage options make it easy to grab a skein when inspiration strikes while adding charm to your crafting space. Just be sure to store them in a cool, dry place to avoid dust or damage.

If you have a large stash but need to save space, vacuum-sealed bags are a lifesaver. These compression bags reduce the bulk of your yarn, keeping it protected from dust and moisture. They’re especially useful for storing seasonal yarns or extra stock that you don’t need immediate access to.
By finding the right storage solution for your space and crafting style, you can keep your yarn stash neat and inspiring. Which of these storage ideas do you love the most? Share your favorite yarn storage hacks in the comments!
