IMHO, the #1 thing new pellet grill owners need to be aware of is...pellet care/storage.

    Pellet Care / Storage

Take care of how you store your cooking pellets. I recommend never storing the bags directly on cement floors (potential condensation). I also recommend putting opened bags of pellets in plastic storage containers with lids. I use 5 gallon paint buckets with lids…be sure to mark it or put the folded up pellet bag on top of the pellets in the bucket to easily identify the pellets in that bucket or bin.

Store them in a dry area like a garage.

I’m in CHS and thinking we probably get as much humidity as anyone in CONUS (other than maybe NOLA). I’ve always taken good care of storing my pellets. I’ve had a wood pellet grill for close to 15 years. I do not empty the hopper on my RT-700 except twice a year when I give it a thorough cleaning. I do keep my uncovered Bull on my screened porch so it’s not sitting out in the rain. But no humidity issues with what’s already in the hopper. Never had an auger jam. So my money is on your pellets….the ones you’re putting into your hopper.

Someone else mentioned basement storage could be a contributing factor. I’d agree and wholeheartedly so if the bags of pellets are laying on a cement floor.

Be mindful of how much pellet dust is getting in the hopper. That’s more often when you’re dumping the last part of a bag of pellets. I am admittedly anal about the dust. I use a kitchen colander to sift my pellets once it’s getting anywhere near the bottom of the bag (or storage buckets). I’m pretty sure the few people that said they used to do that don’t anymore.

Last thing…my personal opinion is that the more bags of pellets are individually handled, the more likely you’ll get a bag of crushed pellets and/or pellet dust. I’ve looked at bags at grocery stores, home improvement stores, outdoor stores, a pool store, etc. I look them over even if I’m not there to buy any. When I see them still in the bin they were shipped in they typically look pretty good. The ones on my grocery store shelves, not so much. I’m not plugging cookinpellets.com but when I ordered a half pellet full of pellets, each bag came in its own, individual cardboard box…tightly, packed/sealed. I’ve never seen pellets in better condition. So I have my bias about pellets for sure.

I hope some nugget(s) out of this post helps you. Unused pellet storage maybe the most important factor in pellet grill usage. YMMV.

I store mine in a 5 gallon bucket with a tight fitting lid. I usually have several different kinds so I use the bag label to identify what is in the bucket.

I probably went overkill a bit and got food grade 5 gallon buckets with lids. They weren't drastically more expensive and it keeps the wife happy that I'm using good food hygiene from pellet to product. I even wash my hands before cooking these days!

I’ve bought four of the food grade 5-gal buckets and screw-on lids from the BORG also-no regrets. If nothing else, they have to keep the pellets dryer?

Type in 5 gallon bucket screw lid and go from there. I bought just the lids and use menards buckets. I personally dont buy the "food grade" hype on plastic buckets.....

I could be wrong, but im storing wood pellets, not food....

Just my opinion on the subject....

I do however cringe when i see acid containing substances used with foil....

I do believe you're right, but that whole "happy wife happy life" has gotten me this far... I just ended up ditching all of my nonstick Calphalon cookware with Made In stainless and ceramic frying pans because someone "read an article about forever chemicals." Hey, as long as my meat deliveries and the occasional Wusthof, Thermoworks, Milwaukee Tool, and Brownells orders aren't challenged, I'm not complaining.

Both my wife and I are Stage IV cancer survivors, (inflammatory breast cancer, 21 years for her, head and neck cancer, 13 years for me) so there are some things we are not willing to introduce more risk into our life. Not being judgmental for those who take a different approach, but hopefully some will understand why we take the path we do.

100% agree, big business is our employer maybe, but not our health friend IMHO. We have to make our own, hopefully informed decisions. I am a believer in the safer the better. I am still watching numbers for another couple of years myself.

We've been using this Food Vault:

Yes, it's sold as a Pet Food Container, but it is Food Grade and holds 100 lbs +/- of Pellets

And I use this to scoop the Pellets to the Hooper:

I use a 40lb capacity dog food storage container with a good gasket seal, has wheels and worked like a charm for years now.
