Submersible sewage ejector pumps are designed to handle raw sewage and solid waste materials. These pumps are normally used to push raw sewage up hill from a whole home, basement bathroom, or external structure to a septic tank, aerobic treatment system, or gravity sewer main. Sewage pumps have a 2'' or 3'' discharge and can handle up to 2'' spherical solids.
Purpose: Sewage ejector pumps are high-volume, low-pressure submersible solids-handling pumps that move raw sewage wastewater from a lift station (e.g., in a basement or outside a home) to a septic tank, aerobic treatment system, or gravity sewer main
Solid Handling: Capable of handling spherical solids up to 2 inches in diameter, ensuring reliable performance with raw sewage
Discharge Size: Available with 2-inch or 3-inch NPT discharges to accommodate various plumbing setups
Horsepower Range: Models range from 4/10 HP to 2 HP, providing flexibility for different pumping requirements
Construction: Built with heavy-duty materials, such as cast iron, for durability and long-term reliability in harsh environments.
Sewage ejector pumps are best suited for the following scenarios:
Pumping to a Septic Tank: Ideal for transferring raw sewage from a residence to a septic tank without the need for grinding
Pumping to a Gravity Sewer Main: Suitable for moving sewage to a non-pressurized sewer main
Short Distances: Effective for pumping sewage up to 750 feet horizontally
Low Vertical Lift: Recommended for applications with vertical lifts under 70 feet.
Note: Sewage ejector pumps should not be used when pumping to a pressurized city sewer main or when high head pressure (over 30 feet) is required, as these scenarios are better suited for sewage grinder pumps.

PLEASE NOTE: Many grinder pumps must be used in scenarios where there will be at least a minimum of 30 feet of head pressure put on them. If they do not have to pump against at least this much back pressure, the motor will begin to spin at an extremely high rate of RPMs causing it to burn up fairly quickly. Therefore, if you are not pumping into a shared sewer main or have less than 30 feet of head, you want a sewage ejector not a sewage grinder pump.
You should only use a Sewage Grinder Pump when one the following apply to your application:
Below are the scenarios when a Sewage Ejector Pump will work best:
In summary, not all sewage handling pumps are Grinder Pumps and a Sewage Grinder pump is not always necessary to pump raw sewage. In fact, in most cases a Sewage Ejector pump is the much better option. And, there are certain scenarios when you could use either type.
