    Cat High Pressure Plunger Pumps

    The CAT pumps range of high pressure triplex plunger pumps are designed for use in applications where very high pressure is required. These positive displacement plunger pumps are suitable for extremely high pressure applications in the industrial and marine markets. These CAT plunger pumps are capable of producing pressures up to 690 bar and can handle fluids with viscosities up to 500cp.

    The unparalleled CAT plunger pump design allows them to achieve such high pressures, this is what makes them suitable for applications that other pump types cannot possibly handle. The plungers move in a synchronised motion, this helps the pump to produce a low pulsating and smooth flow. Chambers within the triplex plunger pump hold a precise amount of fluid, this ensures a constant and precise flow is always provided. Changing the speed of the CAT pumps via a gearbox or VFD allows the pump to achieve varying flow rates while maintaining a constant high pressure. CAT plunger pumps are over 50% more energy efficient than other pumps types.

    Various accessories can be supplied with these CAT pumps, they include pulsation dampeners for providing a smoother flow and pressure relief and pressure regulating valves for controlling pressure and as a safety feature for the operator.

    Common applications for CAT plunger pumps include high pressure cleaning, misting, cooling and fogging, energy, oil and gas, marine, construction and quarrying, transport and vehicles, agriculture, food and drink, metalworking and manufacturing, chemical and processing, reverse osmosis and water, environment and waste.

    The CAT triplex plunger pump range is available in brass, nickel aluminium bronze and stainless steel. The seals and o-rings within these plunger pumps can be supplied in many materials, including Viton, EPDM, PTFE and NBR. The combinations of metals and rubbers add a great range of flexibility to the CAT pumps range of plunger pumps, making them suitable for handling most fluids.

    What is the difference between a piston pump and a plunger pump?

    Piston and plunger pumps are very similar is design and are both utilised for applications requiring very high pressures, such as; cleaning, misting and reverse osmosis. The main difference between the two pump types is that plunger pumps are installed with a different high-pressure seal design. This allows plunger pumps to achieve much higher pressures than piston pumps.

    What type of oil should I use for the crankcase?

    Cat Pumps have developed their own special formula Cat oil for their non-food grade pumps. It is a hydraulic oil containing additives such as anti-wear stabilisers and anti-corrosion technology. These additives provide further lubrication to the crankcase that is not provided by standard oils. We can supply this oil in various container sizes. Using alternative oil may lead to more frequent oil changes being required and premature wear of the crankcase components.

    How do I know if a pulsation dampener is required for my application?

    A pulsation dampener reduces pulsations in the pipework downstream from the pump. A pulsation dampener is typically required if the system is sensitive to pulsations and requires a smooth flow, such as hydrostatic testing or reverse osmosis. Pulsation dampeners or accumulators have additional benefits like reducing vibrations in pipework and extending the life of components downstream from the pump, such as regulating valves. By reducing pulsations and vibrations, the risk of water hammer is significantly reduced, and operators experience less fatigue when using hand operated nozzles.

    Do I need an unloader valve or a regulator valve in my system?

    Our recommendation is to have both an unloader/regulator valve and a secondary relief valve. A regulating valve is the primary protection for the pump and operator, this regulates pressure to the required amount for the system. The unloader valve relieves pressure and protects the pump and the operator during nozzle applications. The unloader valve will open and relieve the excess pressure when the nozzle is closed. A further relief valve should be installed as a last line of defence in case the regulator/unloader valve fail to operate. The relief valve is typically set around 200-300 PSI above the unloader/regulator set pressure.

    How do I know what pump materials are correct for my application?

    Firstly, always check the compatibility of the materials available against the fluid being pumped. The main materials to check are the pump casing, piston, o-ring and mechanical seal. It may be that more than one material is suitable for your fluid and selection could be based on the application type. For instance; cast iron, bronze and stainless steel are all suitable for fresh water. If it is a simple washing application, then the most cost-effective material cast iron will be best. However, if it is a sanitary application, then stainless steel or bronze are better choices.
