£10 water pump from Aldi

    kevinl

Aldi are doing a drill operated water pump from next Thursday, for a tenner is it worth a punt?

I have one very similar bought from machine mart for around £11. Use it to empty the cratch because the drainage pipe is blocked. Chucks out a decent volume of water pretty quickly. Recommended

Plenty to be had on Ebay, I have one and yes they are very handy.

Handy for standby, and work nicely with a rechargeable drill.

Check the materials, and you may find it will handle diesel, if only for a few minutes, which may be all that's needed.

They do claim there's a wide range of stuff that won't harm it.

I have used these ( or various ones like it) for diesel and they last 2 or 3 years, so I reckon they are OK with diesel, and just wear out

It is rated for oil and water but potable water after oil would make odd tasting tea! Keep it for clean water or everything else.

It is rated at 3000 RPM but battery drills never get near that, divide the output by about 5 to get the flow with a battery drill at 600 rpm.

If you have the drill, than it's a fair buy.

Have one, in regular use for the last five years to transfer diesel, the only difference I can see is the label as mine came from Machine Mart.

Mine also came with spare internals, which I have put somewhere safe.

    Oops.

That is a good idea, it is all to easy to loose such items.

Whilst not this specific model I have had a couple in the past and have not been impressed.

I had a 'water problem' in that I had a full tank, but no water getting to the pump - in order to avoid a 'flood' when the blockage was cleared I tried to pump out the tank using one of these 'drill pumps'. It would not lift the water out of the tank - I tried it in a bowl of water and it seems that the maximum 'head' they will pump is about 6 inches.

I ended up buying a 12v submersible pump from a caravan shop for about £20 which did the job perfectly.

If you are pumping from a Jerry can standing on the back, then as a 'powered siphon' the drill pump will do the job but in my experience, not much else.

Maybe there are better models about that those I have used.

Some pumps need to be primed first as the clearances within the pump will not support the pumping (suction) of air..

If pumping clean water, you can induce priming, by first sucking on the outlet pipe ( pump switched off) to draw water into the pump, then quickly switch it on before the water has drained back out again...If you have a longer outlet, you could do this with the pump on, but may get a mouthfui if you don't detect the change of note of the pump, or react quickly enough !

I purchased one from Aldi last year and threw it out after the first (failed) attempt to use it. It wouldn't self prime and I wanted to move diesel so I wasn't going to suck the end of the outlet hose!

    bottle

Two people have said that they have had problems with them priming.

I also had this 'problem' but found out that by shortening the pick up pipe, enabled it to work.

My pick hose is about 8ft long.

To enable 'pick up' the drill has to be on high speed but once the liquid has reached the pump the speed can be lowered to quite a low speed.

I do have a variable speed (trigger controlled) drill.

    Alan de Enfield

Even when primed the 'head' is a problem.

On the tests in a washing up bowl, the 'pick up pipe' was very short (maybe 12") and I had to almost touch the water with the pump to get it to pick up, then as I lifted the pump to about 6" height it kept pumping, but at 9" - 12" it lost all its power (presumably the water just ran back thru the pump into the bowl)

I havn't taken one apart by I assume that it has a rubber / plastic impeller. & running this dry whilst trying to prime the pump could burn off the ends of the 'fingers' making it work less efficiently, so it doesnt prime, so it burns off more ...........

I'll stick with my submersible 12v pump at 10-15 litres per minute (depending on 'head')

and why shouldn't you whatever works for you, I was just relating my findings it may help someone.

Exactly, I've put so many things safe haven't a snowballs chance of ever finding them again

    leeco

I really need one of these as the other day I was drinking red diesel trying to syphon some into my tank.
