2017 3.5L Water Pump Replacement

    Question about aftermarket pumps

I have a 2017 f150 3.5L the water pumps going out in it is their any aftermarket pumps that are a better quality then the motorcraft ones? To my understanding and from what I've seen this is common occurrence for these trucks so I don't really want to put another ford one on since their known to fail, I've looked everywhere and can only find Gates water pumps as an alternative, and help would be much appreciated, thanks guys.

    Motorcraft Recommendation

Motorcraft is all I recommend. Half of the companies out there all use the same supplier anyways. Gates/Mahle/Motorcraft are reputable. But I’d stay away from Amazon/eBay parts. Half the people complaining about water pumps have never ever serviced their cooling system, or they think it’s a similar design to the flawed transverse mounted 3.5 engines. These trucks are relatively cheap and easy to do them on. I’ve owned 3 of these and drive 5 more of them at work and only 2 of them have needed water pumps.

Coolant Flush and Water Pump Failure

Thank you for the advice and yeah it's just just bad luck I guess, the truck just turned 100k about 3 months ago so I figured while I did an oil change I should flush out the old coolant and put new in so I did as they recommend to flush the hole system/engine and turn heater on and let it run for a while then shut off, drain, repeat. Bought the tool to get all the air so I wouldn't have air pockets and added new motorcraft coolant "yellow". Haven't been driving it much, mostly been driving my company vehicle now, but noticed 3-4 weeks ago it was 1 gallon low so I added some but the last 2-3 times I driven it now, short distances it almost sounds like a grinding noise up front and the coolants down again a little so I'm assuming it's the water pump going bad.

    Motorcraft for Replacement

Mrs 5.0 needed a water pump this spring but my Ecoboost has more km and it’s still running strong. I would recommend Motorcraft for replacement.

    Bearing Failure and Coolant Flush

I will second the motorcraft water pump. Mine failed at 152K, just after I had the coolant flushed at 150K and the passenger side turbo coolant line failed at 151K. My failure sounded like a bearing gave out ... no coolant loss.

    Sticking to Motorcraft

Thats exactly what it sounds like, thank you. I guess I'll stick to the motorcraft water pump then.

    Slight Leak and Motorcraft OE

I have the 3.5 but I changed my water pump at around 70k and 8 years old. It was leaking ever so slightly at an o-ring where it connects to a pipe entering the block and I discovered this during a pressure test. I used motorcraft and its been fine since. Id only use motorcraft OE for parts like this as many others on here do.

    Bearing Failure and Replacement Unit

Bearing failed on mine. It was progressive as the vehicle was having problems with temp, but it was over 130k when it went out. Should get at least 100k on a replacement Motorcraft unit.

    Extended Warranty

Well I think I might have lucked out for once, forgot I got the extended highest warranty the dealer offered that supposedly covers everything besides cosmedic damages and it doesnt run out until june of this year so hopefully i can talk them into redoing the timing chain as well, we'll see tomorrow.

    Yellow Coolant

Isn't the yellow coolant supposed to be better for water pumps than the orange coolant was?

    Upgraded to Yellow Coolant

I upgraded to yellow coolant on mine some years ago. I can tell no difference, but my understanding is that its less corrosive and less likely to crud up and congeal.

    Overheating

I feel this. 3 wks ago a flush done at the dealer, driving home, 20 degrees ambient, overheated (238, I didn't know the temp would display above the gauge, cool). Been saving to replace phasers on my dime anyway, (done a couple time before on warranty), so I had t-stat/pump done too. Got it back, and it's still overheating with grill shutter actuator codes. I'm going to remove the shutters, in hopes I can show it's not the shutters causing overheat condition. Does anyone have any thoughts on this?

    Non Motorcraft thermostat

Non Motorcraft thermostat? I recall one time a user had a dealership put in a Motorad t-stat. As the saying goes for our trucks “If it’s Motorad - It’s bad”.

    Thermostat for a motorcraft one

Simply changing out the thermostat for a motorcraft one satisfied the high-speed fan issue that I had. Aftermarket. Always screws everything up.

    Warranty Company

It was the water pump, thats the only answer I've gotten so far in a week and half, not sure if that was the only issue or not. The dealer I took it to toar it apart, filed the paper work and sent it to the warranty company but I guess their being your typical warranty contract. Last I heard was the warranty company was sending an inspector out to do his own quote, that was Monday morning.

    Warranty Covered

Update on the truck: got a call this morning from the dealer they told me the warranty covered the cost of the water pump/timing chain and some other small items @ $2,100, I have a $250 deductible, not so bad.

    Federal Warranty

What is the code? How many miles? isn't there a federal warranty for emissions components?

    Troubleshooting

Grab the truck as is. Then do the necessary troubleshooting, with the help of the forum, to confirm that you in fact need new cats. You might. But you might not. At least not yet.

    Factory Emissions Warranty

You should have a 10 year factory emissions warranty that would cover cat replacement unless your mileage is past it. Cant remember the mileage requirement But the thing to remember is, 9 times out of 10, catalytic converters don't just go bad on their own. Not on these trucks anyways. Too much fuel, too little fuel, burning oil, too much Seafoam treatment, burning coolant, improper fuel, intake leaks, faulty O2 sensors, improper tuning, etc......are all things that can cause cat failure or mimic it. Just replacing cats and clearing the codes likely isn't going to fix the issue.

    Replacing O2 sensors

I don't think it's the cats, I always maintained it pretty well never burnt oil or coolant until this, never ran sea foam threw it, never has been tuned that i know of, I put a K&N intake on it and the guy that owned it before me put an exhaust on it. Im gonna start with replacing all the O2 sensors, new plugs and coils and go from there.

    Parts they fixed

Picked the truck up on Friday read over the receipt of parts they fixed and the left side over head was cracked and leaking, the right side was leaking, replaced then Valve covers, the bearing in the water pump was going out and the pulley was wobbling they said, and a couple small minor things. But they never replaced the timing chain along with the water pump....should I be concerned and get that replaced right away as well or let it go for now?

    Chains and phasers

Got cold soak rattle on startup? If not then your chains and phasers are OK.

    Timing chain

Timing chain doesn’t drive the water pump on these. Nothing to worry about. Looks like they fixed a couple common issues. You should be set for awhile.

    Emissions

Dealer has to cover the emissions for 8 years 10 in Massachusetts That's converters everything , check your state

    8 years or 80k miles

8 years or 80k miles mines at 107k, worth a shot though, thanks

    Replace my water pump

Looking to replace my water pump. For those that have done this will I need to remove and replace my thermostat housing? thank you

    Nightmares

Wherever I look it's nothing but nightmares and more throwing of good money after bad.
