water pump housing

    tonyr6

Has anybody on here changed there own water pump thermostat housing on mk7R mines a 2014 ? 33k on clock

    mikie22

Cant help but does the wp make any noise when its on its way out?

    tonyr6

Not sure but I think I have the dreaded coolant issue

    gpf1xxx

According to VW...these coolant leaks could be the thermostat housing and/or the water pump. My car is in the dealer, as I type this, for said coolant leak. The strip down identified the leak as the thermostat housing...luckily only two years old so warranty covered. Picking it up in the morning hopefully.

Mines just been in for a coolant leak. They just said there isn’t one: even though the level is slowly dropping and you can smell it from the engine bay after driving. That said, they only did a cursory “inspection” I’m sure. No strip down.

Need to have a closer inspection of mine !!

I’ve fitted loads it’s do able diy but not easy it’s all done from underneath so a ramp makes the job much easier. Removing and refitting the drive belt can be awkward and bleeding the system technically requires special tools. Tbh you would need to be a very good diy mechanic with a comprehensive tool kit to compleate job. Also we replace both the pump and housing every time. Belt and braces

What sort of special tools are required to bleed the system?,mine hasnt failed (yet) im a mechanic but havent worked on cars (other than my own) in 20 years now as i work for the MOD.

We have a vw cooling filling tool which connects up to a air line creating a vacuum sucking all the hoses in and then filling the system in one go with no air locks. I’m sure bleeding the system with out would be an absolute nightmare as even the factory can’t get all the air out

I was a vw mechanic but not for 20yrs now so will drop the undertray and investigate and take it from there ! Was interested in finding out if people had tackled it themselves?? as I'm out of warranty now

    tonyr6

Was really looking for a rundown of the procedure as in inner arch liner removed for access or any pit falls along the way ? Any pointers much appreciated

    Dan1982

Ok it’s not under the arch. The water pump is bolted to a plastic thermostat housing on the front of the engine block under the intake manifold. It is driven by a small belt that connects to the balancer shaft. You need to remove the charge pressure hose and throttle body. There’s and small additional coolant pump and hoses to remove also. Then you need to remove the belt cover from the end of the housing undo the housing bolts to the block and manipulate the thermo stat housing from behind the belt and down out of the vehicle. I can’t explain how tricky this is!! Then the water pump is bolted to the side of the housing. Putting it back together is even more tricky! There’s a small plastic connecting hose that has to be lined up as you slide the housing back in. Refitting the drive belt is very tricky too. I normally start it over the pump and turn the engine over pulling the belt on abit like the chain on your bicycle. Then refit every thing you’ve removed and bleed the system.

This is the small connecting hose you need also. It goes into the hole next to the red circle on the lower picture.

Thanks sounds bit of a nightmare !!

Did they change both thermostat AND the pump under warranty? My Dealer has advised I have a leak in the thermostat - luckily I’m still in warranty but they said I should also change the water pump as well which I will need to pay for the part. Is this normal? As the pump is bolted on to the thermostat should they change both together under warranty? Is it also good practice to change the drive belt?
