That’s funny! Although now, coming down from my New Year’s Downton Abbey marathon, I was thinking how nice it would be to have a ladies maid to put away my jewelry and pack all of my weekendinthecountry clothes. When we go somewhere that has full service only, my husband feels so awkward not doing it himself that he gets out and chats with the attendant.

Hahaha! Love it! I am reminded of the early 70’s, when I lived outside Memphis, TN and self-service gas stations were just becoming a thing. It was very common to see hand-lettered signs reading something to the effect of: “Hep yo sef.” (Not kidding!) My point being, jeez, even semi-literate gas station owners or sign makers could manage to pump their own petrol. Who knew?

I lived in Oregon for 9 years 25 years ago. Yep, illegal to pump your own gas (well, until now it some places it appears). So I am sure there are people that have lived in Oregon their whole lives and never traveled anywhere that wouldn’t know how to pump their own gas. Of course it really isn’t that hard to do, so pretty sure they would pick it up pretty fast. I didn’t like it mainly because it drove gas prices up. On the other hand, it did provide a part time job for several of my college friends back in the day. And when it was really cold nasty snowy weather it was kind of nice to not have to get out in it… but in the end not worth the extra cost in gas. Although… there was that really good looking attendant at that one gas station…

When it came to pass in the South, my best friend taught me how to pump my own gas. My family had always used gas stations where we got full service, windshields washed, oil and water checked, etc. So gas prices were low with full service and skyrocketed with self service. I never knew that Oregon still had full service.
