sand pump drain cap

New sewage ejector system installation

    Installation Questions

The user has a basin in the ground with basement plumbing connected to it and is ready to connect it to the main gravity system. The discharge and vent are 2". The user asks about installing the check valve in a vertical position and about using unions on both discharge and vent pipes.

    Check Valve Position

The installation instruction states not to install the check valve in a vertical position because solids will rest on top of the "flapper". The user asks if it is okay to install it vertically.

    Unions

The user is considering putting unions on both discharge and vent pipes in case the pump needs to be replaced. The connections on the basin lid are 2" threaded. The user asks how to replace the pump without unions.

    Servicing the Pump

It is recommended to install a ball valve on the discharge for servicing the pump. If a grinder pump is installed, it will need to discharge to a 4 inch drain due to the pressurized discharge. Installing the check valve in the vertical will not hurt anything. Install a ball valve above it. That way if you need to service you kill the ball valve disconnect at the check valve and unscrew the connection to the pump. The vent will need to tie into an air only vent no drainage. Also the drain tie in should be a wye on its back or vertical with 10 times the pipe diameter clearance from any drain.

    Sump Pit Specifications

The sump pit shall be not less than 18 inches in diameter and not less than 24 inches in depth. The pit shall be accessible and located such that all drainage flows into the pit by gravity. The sump pit shall be constructed of tile, concrete, steel, plastic or other approved materials. The pit bottom shall be solid and provide permanent support for the pump. The sump pit shall be fitted with a gastight removable cover that is installed flush with grade or floor level, or above grade or floor level. The cover shall be adequate to support anticipated loads in the area of use. The sump pit shall be vented in accordance with Chapter 9.

    Maximum Effluent Level

The effluent level control shall be adjusted and maintained to at all times prevent the effluent in the sump from rising to within 2 inches of the invert of the gravity drain inlet into the sump.

Pump Connection to the Drainage System

Pumps connected to the drainage system shall connect to a building sewer, building drain, soil stack, waste stack or horizontal branch drain. Where the discharge line connects into horizontal drainage piping, the connection shall be made through a wye fitting into the top of the drainage piping and such wye fitting shall be located not less than 10 pipe diameters from the base of any soil stack, waste stack or fixture drain.

    4 inch Drain

A grinder pump with a 10 foot head at 21 GPM is equal to 42dfu. 3 inch is to small to receive it. A DFU is a unit of measurement used in plumbing to determine pipe load based on fixtures on the pipe. So you will need to take your discharge to a 4 inch pipe and make sure you slope it so it drains into the gravity drain.

    Ball Valve

A ball valve in Ohio on residential is not required. But it is recommended to install one on the discharge to avoid the feces shower. Unions are fine to use if you want.

    Vent Pipe

If there is no union on the vent pipe how am I going to unscrew it from the lid and lift the lid to get to the pump? Then install a union normally one just slides the sump lid up on the vent to get it out of the way. It makes sense if the vent have a grommet. But like I said mine is threaded.

    Diagram

Make sure the house drain is 4 inch not 3 inch and use a ball valve not a gate valve. connect 10 pipe connections away from other drains. What if my main house drain is 3" ? I have to replace the whole thing? It is 4" where it leaves the house but there is a reducer to 3" as soon as the pipe exits the wall in the basement. Basically there is no room at all to connect to the 4". The 3" main line runs about 30ft.

    Clean Out

You have a 4 inch clean out on that last wye going out. Just screw in a 4 inch MIP Plastic then add a 4 by 2 wye looking up and another clean out on the end of the 4 by 2 wye. A MIP is a male Thread adapter it will screw into your current 4 inch clean out just use the same plastic as your house. Then add a 4 by 2 wye another clean out and pick up your pump drain. No matter the material just go with PVC due to cost. You can screw in a 4 inch PVC adaptor into any type of plastic that is a legal transition. Get some teflon pipe dope and teflon tape for the threaded connections. You will also need a small piece of 4 inch PVC PIPE and PVC glue and cleaner.

    Inspector Approval

If your inspector approves tie it in as far away from other fixtures as you can so the pumped discharge does not interfere with your trap seals. Use a wye on its back for the tie in. If he won"t all you need do is run 4 inch into the building not the entire line. Your supposed to have a clean out anyways the size of the 4 inch sewer outside.

    Pump Discharge

But then the discharge will be from pump about 9ft up and then about 30ft horizontal to the WYE. Remember you are dealing with a pump discharge. Use a wye on its back with a 2 inch st 45. That way it has directional flow and is less disturbing to the plumbing system. Pitch your 2 inch to the wye 1/8 inch per foot is fine for the pump. As long as the pump discharge drains.
