It’s a comet pump made exclusively for hydramarers spitfire 3.2 (hydro pump ii). Have all the comet manuals in front of me but can’t find the oil grade needed. Speaking to a pump engineer tomorrow who has a garage-proper work shop exclusively for pressure washers. He says he puts car engine oil in them but I don’t quite think that right. What kind/grade of oil do I need for my high pressure pump and at what quantity?
Don't put car oil in it; use a 30W NON-DEGERTENT oil. You can also use Cat Pump oil. That pump should have a sight-glass on it or a dipstick to let you know how much oil to put in. Did you try comet's website to find any info?
So could I use SAE 30 oil the oil that you use on the Briggs and Stration engine since as i have some spear. I also need a spitfire 3.2 ignition sticker. I got quoted from one of the Hydramaster distributors (no names) $150!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
30HD for the engine (detergent oil). 30ND for the pump ( non detergent)
No, because the Briggs oil will have detergent in it. What do you mean by a ignition sticker?
I know what detergent is. But what is detergent oil. The sticker is stuck to the ignition panel. It’s the great big sticker you can see on the front of the machine ‘hydramaster spitfire 3.2'
Most motor oils have detergents in them to help keep the engine clean of deposits, etc. In the case of a pressure pump you do not need (or want) a detergent in the oil because there is no combustion taking place in the pump or air intake (unlike an engine) that would cause it to get dirty. So there is no requirement of the oil to clean the crankcase of a pressure pump, only to cool and lubricate it. Engine oil on the other hand has to be able to clean the engine while it is cooling and lubricating. If you put detergent motor oil in your pump it will foam up and could cause overheating and over-pressurization of the crankcase. Just put a 30W non-detergent in your Comet pump and you will be fine.
Would synthetic 10 30 engine oil do the job. Or an EP 80-90 gear box oil (mineral oil) do
we always use hydraulic pump oil in our pumps seem to work fine sorry dont know the specs of the oil thats our mechanics job.
We have told you what to use, why do you keep asking these questions? I have told you to NOT use engine oil, that includes synthetic engine oil. I told you to use a 30W oil; why would you ask if a 80w-90 will work? You can also use Cat Pump oil or an ISO-68 hydraulic oil.
It’s just that my mate has a drum of synthetic 10 30 engine oil and he swears its non detergent
Also I need 2 yards of 5/8” bore garden hose/low pressure water hose in royal blue. Cant find any in royal blue over hear since standard garden hose in the UK is 3/8”. Also need 4’ of 1/4” bore or 5/6” fuel hose in royal blue. Anyone know of any contacts over there in the states. Thanks. Batista230
Bataista, I will see what I can do.
I purchased my last pump for my truckmount and my Comet oil here. You can use any 30 weight non detergent oil in your pump. Oils made specifically for pumps such as Comet oil or Cat oil contain agents to prevent oxidization and corrosion. Maybe I'm just paranoid, but these pumps are expensive so I always opt to put what the manufacturer recommends. It may cost a little more, but you don't really change pump oil that often anyway.
thanks Chris
