Water Pump Strainer Filter

    PopUpSteve

When was the last time you changed the strainer filter of your water pump? Well, I never have, never even thought about it, don't remember reading about it in the camper's manual, and I don't think I ever even read the manual for the water pump. Since to replace the whole assembly would involve removing the pump as well, I'll have to remove the clear cover and see what kind of screen is needed. I was planning on rerouting the cold water line to the outside shower to allow me to put a shelf in, just above the Water Heater, so one more thing for the to-do list in that cabinet.

It’s usually just a screw tight holder, with a simple cleanable screen filter. Had to open mine up and clean it once, easy job as long as you can access the pump. I vaguely remember that with the clear filter lid removed, the turning clearance improved to not require me to unmount the pump.

If you notice, the photo with the yellow circle, you can see how close the unit is to the wall. Can't turn it without removing the water pump. But the clear cover can be removed and the screen replaced.

I check mine actually. That reminds me I'm adding an accumulator before our big summer trip.

    I clean mine every spring.

What I forgot to check was water in my battery and boiled dry my two year old battery.

If I understand the post, unless something is special about yours, removing the clear bowl is all that should be required to service it. As mentioned there is no real filter to that piece, it’s just a removable particle strainer and its base. The ones I’ve had I cleaned out whenever I thought about it; ie once a year, twice a year, every other year, why does the faucet seem slow and so on. As for the shelf idea, I for one am interested in seeing what you come up with. Good luck with your endeavor.

I wash the strainer every spring. If you remove the clear cap, be sure the o ring doesn't get lost or damaged. Without a good seal at the cap, your pump won't be able to prime and draw water from your tank.

Unless there's something wrong with the screen, you just rinse it out and put it back in. It shouldn't need replacement. Mine was pretty gunky the first time I noticed it. Now I remove it a couple times a season and rinse it.

Yup, I know what must be done and that the screen can be washed or replaced. My intent was to highlight this filter since it has not been mentioned before. This should be on everyone's "Winterization" check list or, on the Spring check list along with the anode rod for hot the Water Heater.

Thanks I regularly check the anadode rod. But never gave mind to the screen unless it developed a leak

The first time we cleaned ours, it had caught plastic filings from the fresh tank, from when they had drilled the openings. It hasn't caught solids since, but we do check it.

I'm usually installing one on my trailers. The last two pups and my current TT didn't have one when I acquired them. I think the pump manufacturers require one for warranty purposes. At least the pump in my TT has to have it for warranty. Did did the TT get built that way? Nope....

Stick to an inline filter. The filters with the housings do nothing more than a good in line filter can do. In addition to the water pump filter screen, my TT came standard with an in-house water filter like the one in your Home Depot link, but I want to take it out. They tend to eventually leak and the housing is a PIA to take off. I plan on eventually taking it out. You can have mine when I do. Though my in-house water filter was standard, Forest River/Flagstaff has stopped installing them in E-Pro and Geo Pro models. So many people have complained about leaks and sticky housings that they stopped putting them in. Mine hasn't leaked yet, but I did have a hell of a time taking the housing off when I winterized. I had to heat it up with a blow dryer just to get the housing loose. And even heating it up I thought I was going to rip the whole thing off of the wall or shatter the housing because I had to put so much pressure on it. Then I had to super tighten it again to prevent leaks. PIA!!

For those of you who either buy new, install a brand new tank or retro fit something This is pretty important. At work we have had a couple pump drain valves plug with bits shavings from fitting installs or retro fits on plastic/polypropylene tanks.

We bought a new tractor that kept running out of fuel. The cause ended up being shavings in the fuel tank from where the fittings were drilled. The fix was to put a clear inline filter in an easy to access fuel line. The tractors now 16 years old. We are still getting some black shavings in those filters.

Speaking of water, was filling the 6gallon jugs the other day and noticed the caps/spouts really needed to be cleaned. Hadn’t paid much attention, so they got washed, just fyi, maintenance.

I inspect mine during de-winterizing. If it's clean, I leave it. I had to clean a friend's filter while camping once. But mine's never been dirty or clogged up.

Ok.... Time for the creep factor. My water pressure was off, a couple of years ago. While checking for problems, I found where the pump was, under the slide-out and also found the water filter. When I opened it, the strainer was completely covered in white webbing. When I drained the water tank the previous fall, something happened, (I know longer remember what), and I didn't get the plug re-installed for a couple of days. As best as I can figure, a spider got into the system, then crawled up through the lines, into the strainer. After making a nice home, kicking back for a few months, I filled/used the tank, and drowned him out. The webbing, combined with lime, was insanely difficult to clean (impossible). I finally gave up, and got a new filter. I'm MUCH more anal about making sure I drain and plug the sucker since then. Since I haven't been able to crawl up walls, or shoot webs out of my wrists, I don't think I have any side-affects...
