What Are Sewage Pumps?

Sewage pump systems move solid and liquid waste from bathrooms, laundry rooms, kitchens, and other parts of your home to the sewer line or septic system so it can exit your home. Typically, these plumbing pumps go in the lowest area of the sewage system and are submerged in water. However, sewage pumps eventually wear out due to regular use and require replacement. When this occurs, the pump may run continuously, make banging or clanging noises or have difficulty starting.

Sewage vs Effluent Pump: What's the Difference?

Sewage pumps are just one of the types of pumps used in homes. Their purpose is much different from sump pumps, which help remove water from crawl spaces and basements to eliminate dampness and reduce the risk of flooding. An effluent pump is similar, but these submersible pumps are part of different systems. Usually, an effluent pump carries wastewater from a septic tank to a septic tank drain field.

Understanding Different Sewage Pump Systems

When shopping for sewage pump systems, there are two main types to choose from: ejector and grinder.

• Ejector pumps can pump large amounts of material over short distances using a rotating impeller and are generally used to move raw sewage to a gravity-flow sewer line or septic tank.
• Grinder pumps break up raw sewage into smaller pieces with vanes and can transport small amounts of sewage over greater distances than ejector pumps. As a result, they work best to move waste to pressurized sewer mains.

Because the two submersible sewage pump types are used for different applications, replacing an existing pump with the same type is best.

Choosing the Right Sewage Pump

To select the right model of sewage pump, consider the following:

• Discharge size:The discharge outlet on a sewage pump connects it to the rest of your plumbing system. When choosing a pump, look for models with a discharge outlet at least as big as the discharge pipe you'll be connecting it to. In most homes, pipe systems are 1.5 inches or larger.
• Flow rate: This specification tells you how much waste a sewage pump can move in a given period of time. Manufacturers measure flow rate in gallons per minute or GPM. The higher the GPM, the more liquid a pump transports per minute.
• Power: How powerful a pump is affects the speed that waste moves through it and how much pressure the waste is under as it moves. Horsepower, or HP, represents how powerful a model is.
