sump pump ups

Viewing a thread - vacuum pump oil? dairy pump

    Rasputin

During the wash cycle noticed a different type of throbbing from the vacuum pump, went in room, heard some other noises I don't like. The tube feeding the oil seems empty, oil seems like it got water in it. So with tomorrow being Sunday and all, can I put another type of oil in to get me by? Thinking ATF myself, probably damage done already but I don't think I can get it repaired before morning milking, would like to get that done on time at least. TIA

By your post, it sounds like you have the pump with several drip oilers ? ATF will work if the pump room is heated. Make sure the oilers do drip (you may have to blow out water / oil sludge out of the oilers with compressed air.) and flush the oil tank. Your pump op manual should list the minimum number of drips per minute (seems ours was 6 per min ?).

when we had an oil pump, we used atf all the time. worked for many years

owners manual for Better Bilt tanker vac pumps call for hyd. oil I believe, and flushing/sludge removal by running some kero sene thru it. FWIW........Good Luck

Got the milking done so that is what counts. I changed a filter, clogged with, for lack of a better word, snot. Not sure if we have a manual, my uncle bought it from a nephew who quit milking. There are 3 drippers, the suck out of an oil recovering unit through a filter. Didn't flush, kept checking to make sure it is still dripping. Will see about flushing tomorrow. Started up and it was tapping some but quickly went away. pump room is always above freezing anyway, thanks for the help.

Glad you got it going, I remember how frantic it is when the milking equipment goes down. That snotty stuff is a mixture of water and pump oil. I believe our oil tank had a top section for new oil and a bottom section for recovered oil. I believe that bottom oil tank section was to be drained once in a while to get rid of moisture . Surge alamo XX+ pump(It's been 20 years , so the details are a bit foggy ???)

This outfit has parts for Surge Alamo pumps if that is what you have. They also say they have operators manual downloads so you can download and print your own manual.

Sounds like you're describing the setup on the pump we had.... a WestPhalia rotary vane I think it was/is?(still in the barn and if you'd be closer.....) We always ran 10w non detergant in ours....

I have a de laval 78 vacuum pump with 3 drippers and an oil reclaimer. I recently had the same problem as you although I happened to catch it before it became noisy. I have no idea how long it ran without getting oil. Filter was plugged due to oil and water mixture. The bearings had a bit more play in them than I liked, not an extreme amount but noticeable. I was told by my dealer (after an emergency phone call on Sunday of course) to put fresh oil and filter on and increase the frequency of drips substantially to flush the bearings good and it should last a long time yet. I increased the dripping to about 2 per second and kept an eye on it during the first milking to make sure it didn't lose too much oil out the exhaust. It worked good and I got replacement bearings the next week. That was a few months ago and I actually have not replaced them yet as the bearings felt quite good after a good oiling. It's definitely on my to do list but has moved down a couple of lines. As far as oil goes I believe it is supposed to be a non-detergent oil. I think hydraulic oil is a suitable replacement if I remember correctly. Someone that knows oil specs better than me might be able to answer that. Good luck.

We used nothing but Co-op transhydraulic oil through our old DeLaval 75 for years with no problems, no reclaimer on it though.
