I just dumped the old oil from the "new" TD6 today, and it was the worst looking oil that I've ever seen. It was a thick, dirty, nasty-looking crud - it's amazing that the engine ever ran with this goop. Before attempting to start the engine, I want to clean as much of this junk out as possible. I'd like to know how others have treated this situation, hopefully without pulling the engine. I was thinking about putting a pan under the drain plug and spraying diesel fluid around the access points (the head is removed, so the oil passages in the upper block, side covers, oil filter assembly, filler, etc) and collecting the gunk in the pan. This thing is filthy... Matt
pull the sump off is the best way . and blast out the engine with a kero gun and compessed air
Don't want to say it, but have to agree. There is probably an inch of paste in the bottom of the pan. Way more than what will rinse out. I remember doing considerable scraping and such.
Agreed with pulling the pan and scraping out the big chunks and using solvent to get it clean. While the pan is off, pull the oil pump pickup and clean the screen and tube assembly. It could be partially plugged also. Jim.
I agree. Diesel alone without agitation won't remove much. If you clean it you can go back with a detergent oil without worrying about too many chunks getting loose in the system.
Thanks for the advice guys. I started pulling "pig iron" off of the front and bottom of the engine compartment last night. I expect to have the oil pan off in a few days. Will post pics of what I find. It'll be nice to see the bottom of the #4 piston (an intake valve fell into the cylinder when the spring broke) and make sure there isn't any damage to the crank, rod, or piston. Matt
