The use of Flue Gas Desulphurisation (FGD) systems in electrical generating plants to control sulphur dioxide (SO 2) emmission from fossil fuel power stations has had a significant growth in the 1970’s and 1980’s. This is due to the growing concern over the the extent of environmental damage caused by acid rain as a result of atmospheric moisture and SO 2 from burning coal.
