I just finished remodeling my basement and I want to replace the sump pump with one that has a battery backup. I noticed that the pipe coming out of the pit extends about 48 inches vertical then horizontal about 18 inches then straight down and connects into a 2 inch drain. Can I reduce the 48 inch vertical so it doesnt stick so far up. Its in a storage closet and it gets in the way. Also, is it normal that it does not have a vent? Thanks for the advise.
Is this sump for groundwater? If so, normally a 2nd battery operated pump is added to the same sump and discharge line. It only operates during a power outage or if the main pump fails. See the sponsors website for this information. An open sump for groundwater discharging to an above ground drainage does not require a vent. Usually a checkvalve is also incorporated to prevent the water in the pipe from flowing back into the sump and short cycling the pump. If you can post a picture and explain where the 2" drain discharges to, a more appropiate answer may be given about the 48" rise.
Thanks for the reply. This may explain it better. The pipe coming from the pump exits the pit through the cover at floor level and extends 48 vertical inches above the floor. From there it 90's and travels about 18 inches horizontal. From there it 90's and travels 48 inches and goes below the slab. Currently there are two pits next to each other but only one has the sump pump in it. This is the original set up from when the house was originally built in the 50's and I assume that it is correct. I have not had any problems but want alittle reassuring that it will work during a power outage. Thanks alot for the help.
