How to increase water presure on a thrash pump?

    Bob

I have a gas engine powered thrash pump. I would like to use it for irragation purposes. Is there anyway I can get more water presure out of it? Thanks bob

The others have given good advice. Keep the lift on the suction side as short as possible. It pushes more efficiently than it pulls. Keep the outlet end as low as possible. Keep all the pipes as short as possible and large enough to minimize friction loss. Remove the foot valve and any other restrictions if feasible. Keep a straight feed to the pump for atleast six pipe diameters if possible. Eliminate all sharp pipe bends/corners a sweeping turn is better.

Had a 3" diaphram pump at the sewage plant years ago. Dont think there is much you can do to really increase the output. Changing pulleys wont get you that much more. Had impeller type in water dept. But were direct drive and the only way you could increase output any at all was to increase motor RPM.

About the only way you can increase the Flow (gpm) that a pump pumps at a pressure caused by friction or head on the system is to increase rpm or increase diameter of the impeller. most trash pumps use a regentive pumping (the impeller causes a swirl of water, the friction of the swirl pumps the flow along with an occasional large object that would stop up a close fitting impeller.) They are not the most eff. pump for clean water, nor great at pumping against high friction or heads (psi). i use my 5 hp pacer pump to run a 1/2 dia nozzle gun type sprinkler, its ok to play with. my father in law has been known to series two pacers in the same line to pump water up a long steep hill to water his garden through lawn type sprinklers. sounds whacky, but we have been very, very, since 1930's type dry around here.

Some pumps have adjustments that can be made to the impeller that may improve preformance. Most trash pumps that I have seen are designed for high volume, large objects, and abrasive liquids. There is not much you can do to increase pressure that would not require more horsepower. You could make sure the engine is running at its recomended rpm. This is all assuming you are talking about a centrifical pump! If it is a diaphram pump that is a whole nother story!

Is it a centrifigal pump or a diaphram???

    Gordon

There is nothing you can do . The trash pump has a open type impellar, the pressure pump has a enclosed type impellar with a different type wear ring. Gordon
