Sump Pump Overflow Burping/Puking on Startup

    Alex2021

Hello! My 17 year old Flotech 1/2 hp sump pump failed about 4 months ago and I ended up replacing it with an Everbilt 1/2 hp and a new Everbilt check valve. During the fall, I noticed there was some water around the exterior overflow. Fast forward to February in Michigan, and now there is some ice buildup below the overflow. I filled up the pot and watched it outside, only to find that when the pump kicks on, there is about 1/4 of water "burping" from the overflow. I've snaked the line going into the ground without any issues. I don't have any trees from the line to my underground storm drain. Any ideas why water is "burping"?

Are you saying it only pumps a quarter of the volume??? Have you checked the bottom of the pump to see if it's clogged

It seems as if the ground isn't taking water as fast as it used to, maybe because it's frozen. I installed a sump discharge similarly for our son years ago, but when I came out through the wall I went into a sanitary T. I then ran the vent straight up about 18 inches and put 2 street L's on it to direct it down. I think it worked fine, but he sold the house 3 years ago.

I filled the pot with approximately 5 gallons of water then fired it up. It spits out about a 1/4 cup at the overflow, rest flows through the discharge. I noticed my old pump took about 5-6 seconds to completely drain where as this takes about 1.5 seconds.

That explains it! The new pump is flooding the storm drain, maybe raising the vent would stop the leakage, maybe not. You could put an orifice in the discharge of the pump to reduce the flow, but it would take some experimenting to get it the right size.

You can put a pvc ball valve on the discharge line, then experiment to find the right setting to choke back the flow a little. Yes, I know it’s not meant to be a throttle, but it works. I do this with pumps for garden ponds, to regulate the output at a waterfall.

I would remove that piece of garbage check valve, and put the new ball valve down there in the same location. I would install a high quality check valve approx. halfway up the discharge pipe. This will reduce water hammer clunk noise after a cycle, and increase the life of the check valve. Falling water is a powerful force. I also like to use sched 40 fittings, not dwv fittings, because this is a pressure pipe, not a drain.

Thank you for the replies! I will do some experimenting and report back.
