What is menthol?

According to Wikipedia, menthol “is an organic compound made synthetically or obtained from the oils of corn mint, peppermint, or other mints. It is a waxy, crystalline substance, clear or white in color, which is solid at room temperature and melts slightly above.” Menthol produces a refreshing cooling effect and has a wide array of applications. It is used in medicine for its antipruritic, analgesic and decongesting effects, as well as in perfumery, confectionery and even cosmetics.

Does menthol have a flavor?

Yes, menthol is derived from mint, and carries a subtle flavor. Menthol’s aroma chemical profile at the Perfumer & Flavorist magazine explains that “l-menthol displays a light, minty, refreshing peppermint odor that at most practical concentrations is complicated by an intense olfactory numbing/cooling sensation.” When it comes to vaping, the minty flavor makes it a perfect fit for mixing with fruit flavors, but the lightness of the aroma allows for a wide array of flavor mixes. Different types of cooling agents

Menthol is very widely used in vaping, either in its original l-menthol form (usually by diluting menthol crystals to propylene glycol), or in a wide array of menthol derivatives. But the term “menthol” nowadays is commonly used to describe any cooling agent used in vaping regardless of its molecular structure, and other formulations that are not technically menthol are also used in vaping. Of these formulations, a very popular one is Koolada (WS3), which was created by a company called Wilkinson Sword. It's very commonly used both in commercial juices and e-liquid DIY—as well as a series of other industries. Koolada, and a variety of other WS cooling agents, are generally comparable to menthol from a cooling perspective but do not come with the characteristic menthol taste. Cooling agents such as these are usually used on their own, but can also be mixed with menthol for a more rounded effect.
