Hog Slat has been designing and manufacturing steel farrowing crates in the USA for over 35 years. Our farrowing crates are currently installed on both domestic and international sow farms and remain a trusted pig production solution for farrowing sows on farms ranging in size from large integrator breeding sites to small scale 4-H and show pig farrowing barns.

Pig Care

Hog Slat has worked with live hog production divisions from the largest integrators in the USA and abroad to design farrowing crate styles and features that meet the needs of many different pig farrowing systems

Hog Slat farrowing crates are designed to provide outstanding sow comfort before, during and after farrowing; while also creating a safe and productive environment for newborn piglets to grow during the nursing period before weaning

Hog Slat farrowing crates create a safe working environment for farrowing barn staff and allow easy access to the sow and piglets for assistance during farrowing, routine animal care and daily observations

Design Features

Front and rear doors are secured by gate drop rods, allowing them to be opened toward either side to provide easy entry/exit for sows

Hog Slat farrowing crate head gates are pre-punched to simplify installation of SowMAX Ad-Lib feeders

Hog Slat manufactures replacement bow bars, finger bars, legs, door panels and other farrowing crate parts that can be purchased individually; extending the lifetime value of your investment while preserving the integrity of high-wear components

All of our farrowing crate models are available in either our classic blue powder-coated epoxy paint or hot-dipped galvanized finishes

Advantage Farrowing Crate

Hog Slat’s Advantage farrowing crate sets the standard for all other farrowing crates. It is the most versatile of all of our crate designs. Advantage crates are available in tubular or solid rod construction and with choices of finger bar or bow bar on each side panel.

The Advantage farrowing crate is the single most versatile crate that will meet every producer’s needs

Universal mounting foot allows Advantage crates to be installed on almost any existing flooring

Hog Slat head gates, rear doors, feeders and creep dividers are available for all new equipment installations

Three side bar options are available (with/without anti-crush bar) to build a crate that meets your specific needs, including; finger bars, bow bars and solid bars (with/without anti-crush bar)

Adjustable finger-style side bars enhance piglets’ access to the teats and allow modifications for different sized sows and gilts

Anti-crush bars flip out of the way when sows stand, but prevent them from "flopping" on their sides when laying down, reducing piglet losses from crushing

Advantage crates are easy to assemble, requiring as few as 12 bolts total depending on side bar options

Optional heat lamp hanger arm and 10” chart plate can be attached to the crate

Solid rod and tubular metal models available in 7’0” and 7’6” lengths

Ultimate Farrowing Crate

Hog Slat’s Ultimate farrowing crate is designed for maximized adjustability to meet the needs of pork producers remodeling existing farrowing barns or building new construction units. The 7/8” solid rod design is built to provide years of reliable performance with large sows in modern production environments.

The rear door on Ultimate farrowing crates is built with a solid rod frame and features a high-density polyurethane (HDPE) solid plastic door panel and double vertical rump rails to prevent piglets from getting caught behind the sow

Loop style finger bars are a welfare-friendly design, precisely placed to provide excellent teat access and protection for nursing pigs

Standard anti-crush bars flip up and down to slow a sow’s movement when transitioning from standing to laying, increasing litter survivability by allowing piglets extra time to move away

Ultimate farrowing crates can be outfitted with a front head gate door that is designed to fit either our large or small style sow feeding bowls

An optional large wet/dry sow feeder bowl can be installed that features a pivoting, tip-out design for easy cleaning and 16” width for maximum head space and sow comfort

Available in 7’0”, 7’6” and 8’0” lengths

Adjustable Farrowing Crate

Hog Slat’s Adjustable farrowing crate features a unique design that allows the two side panels to be adjusted inward or outward to provide appropriate space for each individual sow based on their size.

The width of the Adjustable crate can be easily adjusted from 19.5” to 25.5”

Crate sides are 40” in height, suitable for the largest sows

Both the front and rear door frames and left and right crate sides are identical, allowing either to be easily replaced as needed without keeping excess crate parts on the farm

Rear door rump rail protects piglets from getting caught between a sow and the rear door

Our double nipple crate water pipe easily attaches to the crate side, providing a heavy-duty water nipple up high for the sow and an appropriately sized nipple for young pigs near the floor

Hog Slat stainless steel small sow bowl feeder eliminates corners to prevent feed build up and also pivots out toward the isle for easy cleaning

Sampson Farrowing Crate

Hog Slat’s Sampson farrowing crate has 25+ years of proven excellence in the field. The Sampson crate is designed with pig saving features that will help increase piglet litter survival rates while also providing exceptional sow comfort.

Sampson farrowing crates feature a unique flip bar that allows both sides of the crate to adjust up and down, slowly and gently lowering the sow to the floor when she transitions from standing to laying

The adjustable crate sides allow sows to nurse in comfort while laying down, and adjust in closer to her body while standing to create a large, safe area for pigs in the creep area

Sampson crates are equipped with a double nipple water pipe with a sow drinking nipple on top and a smaller piglet drinking nipple on the bottom close to the floor

The rump rail stays in place when the rear door is opened, keeping the sow in place while also making clean out or birthing assistance tasks easier to complete

Rear rump rail is also adjustable, allowing it to be moved into the correct position depending on whether a sow or gilt is loaded into the farrowing crate

Hog Slat large or small sow feeder bowls can be mounted to the head gate; both featuring a pivoting tip-out design to make feeder cleaning a simple task

International Farrowing Crate

Hog Slat offers an international farrowing crate design that is available to meet the needs and requirements for pork producers in the European Union (EU) and other markets outside the USA.

Crate sizing designed to meet all applicable animal welfare standards

Constructed with the same great pig saving features Hog Slat farrowing crates are known for in the USA

Outfitted with a specialized international style sow feeding bowl that can be used with our SowMAX ad-lib feeder

Multiple watering options are available for both sows and piglets

Stationary front gate anchor side panels, which are moveable for loading/unloading sows from the crate

Hot-dipped galvanized finish with tubular design construction

Galvanized Metal Creep Panels

Hog Slat manufactures rugged, galvanized steel creep divider panels constructed of 16 gauge steel

Standard height creep panels are 21-7/8” tall

Available in custom lengths to match existing or new farrowing crates and flooring configurations

Metal creep dividers are easily pressure washed and disinfected between pig groups

Metal panels resist cracking and prevent harboring bacteria and pathogens unlike PVC dividers
