2010-2015 Prius ICE water pump replacement

    Petrolhead w/ a Prius

Hey everyone - I’m sure there’s a good number of you who already know how to replace the ICE water pump on our 3rd gens. If you don’t however, I’m here to tell you that it is a stupidly easy job that will save you serious $$$ as opposed to going to a shop or the dealer. I recently replaced mine due to a repeat P261B code and decided to make a how-to video on it. The whole process takes about 1hr maybe 1.5hrs. I’m linking the video down below. I’m hoping it will help anyone who needs it - I think it came out good and is easy to understand and follow. Let me know what you think!

Ice water eh... Sounds like something to do with fridges. (I've got a vendetta against "ICE"; when "engine" seems to do the trick. Never sure why we need to slavishly clarify that our "engines" are "Internal Combustion Engines". As opposed to some sorta steam engines, externalcombustion engines, or? It gets even wonkier when you hear "ICE engine", which means "Internal Combustion Engine...Engine", lol.) Sorry, I'm still under the sway of this morning's Americano. And truly, thanks for the video, will have a look.

I'll reply once I've been to the ATM machine and bought another keyboard to plug into this USB bus.

Mendel Leisk said: yeah I know what you mean. I’ve only ever seen it used and abbreviated ICE when referring to engines in a hybrid. Probably because people want to make the distinction of gas engine and electric motor. Granted, engine and motor are not the same thing. I abbreviated it ICE because I see many people on here and on other forums and website’s abbreviate it the same as to make the distinction however.

Right, it's our weird shibboleth habits the newcomers latch onto first. Just calling the engine the engine would seem so ... out of touch.

Acronyms aside, thanks for the video... I need to share it with someone with this error code but before I do I'm wondering if anyone who has done this job before can watch the video and indicate if there's anything left out, or some tips and tricks to make it even easier?

Petrolhead w/ a Prius said: That's what I thought... Just wondering if there's options related to draining the coolant? I think there's more than one location to drain coolant from and maybe one location is easier than another? Also wondering if it'd be easier to do a partial drain of coolant, and if so what that amount is?

    PriusCamper

PS: Thanks for your research on Aisin pumps... Gen2 Prius have inverter coolant pump problems and there's so many cheap ones for under $30 that I've been trying them out and discounting for the hassle for customers if they don't last very long... I just bought an Aisin inverter coolant pump for $33 and it's sitting on my parts rack ready to go and I'm feeling better about this one because of what you said in your video.

PriusCamper said: you could just put a big drain pan and let whatever comes out when you take off the pump come out. This really wasn’t hard to drain. An extra 3 bolts and you can get to the drain from above. Super easy to align a drain pan under the splash shield cut out too.
