The most commonly used pump for shallow wells is the jet pump. Jet pumps are installed above Wells, either at home or in the well house, and pull water out of the well by suction. Because suction is involved, it's atmospheric pressure that really matters. Although air pressure varies with elevation, shallow Wells operated by jet pumps are typically limited to depths of about 25 feet.
The shallow well jet pump is powered by an electric motor that drives the impeller or centrifugal pump. The impellers move water from the well through narrow openings or jets mounted in a housing in front of the impellers. This contraction at the jet leads to an increase in the speed of the flowing water, much like the nozzle on a garden hose. As the water leaves the jet, it creates a partial vacuum, sucking extra water out of the well. Directly behind the jet is a venturi tube with an increased diameter. Its effect is to slow the flow of water and increase pressure. Pumped water - Fresh water drawn from the well by the suction of the jet stream, which is then combined with the drive water and discharged at high pressure into the piping system. Because shallow well jet pumps use water to pump water, they usually need to be filled up before they can work.
