X15 Overheating

    Initial Overheating Issue

    2020 Kenworth T800 S/N: 3WKDD40X2LF**413569** Cummins X15 ESN: 80189840. 162,670 mi. 7,395 hr Truck is always running in the landfills. Driver says truck is overheating the last few days. We changed the thermostat within the last 2 months. Air filter was just changed. I blew out the radiator, but did not split the other coolers to truly blow out the radiator. Is there any other things I should check? Thank you for any help.

    Radiator Cleaning Recommendation

    IMO-The only way to clean a radiator core externally is remove the A/C denser plus air charge cooler/CAC. Use a pressure washer not holding it to close to fins. The amount of crap stuck between those can be significant, plus pressure was the CAC core and A/C.

    Action Taken

    Ill do that first thing once it gets back.

    Cleaning Methods

    This was a big problem at the feed company, all the trucks were in the dirt 50% of the day and got clogged up all the time. If we had time or manpower would split condenser and CAC for thorough cleaning. For the rest of the times, took a power wash wand, removed the pipe out of the body and installed a 2 ft. hydraulic line with the pressure nozzle fitted on the end. You could then get the pressure stream directed into the entire surface of the rad. inside the shroud instead of just where you could poke the long wand. JUST BEWARE OF THE WHIP ACTION and hide it from all the drivers! Also fashioned a ball valve with a long piece of 3/8 copper line with the end flattened for some spray pressure that ran off the regular water hose, could fit that in the space between the rad. and CAC to get some of that fur off most of the time. Worked great in a pinch.

    Temperature Checks

    If you want, you can check the temps if it comes in hot. The "top" and "bottom" of the radiator, or the thermostat outlet to the radiator and the water pump inlet from the radiator. If you can get it to whatever temp the fan turns on, then the bottom of the radiator should be 10-20F cooler than the top, and it won't be because it's plugged with trash blocking the airflow. Less than that obviously with the fan off. As long as this has the original coolant, then it's not plugged internally, and not likely to lose a water pump that quick, unless there's something particular about them I don't know.

    Radiator Cleaning Result

    I ended up just splitting the radiators and blew everything. They were all pretty packed. What would be a good interval to split the radiators and blow everything out? The trucks run in the landfills all day. I would think 2-4 times a year?

    Preventative Measures

    Could possibly run a garden hose on them at the end of the day after they cooled for a bit, wash a little dirt off the frame while your at it.
