How does a slurry pumps work? Here's all you need to know

How does a slurry pump work?

The slurry pump is a type of centrifugal pump, which refers to a mechanical device that uses centrifugal force (the rotation of the pump impeller) to add energy to the liquid-solid mixed medium, converting electrical energy into kinetic and potential energy of the medium.

The operating process of the slurry pump is actually a process of energy transfer and conversion. It transfers the mechanical energy generated by the high-speed rotation of the electric motor through the pump blades and converts it into the pressure and kinetic energy of the fluid being pumped.

The main process of the working principle:

When the slurry pump starts to work, the slurry to be treated is first introduced into the pump body through the feed port. A drum filter or spiral flow regulator is usually installed at the feed inlet to block larger solid particles and control the feed flow.

Inside the slurry pump is an impeller driven by an electric motor. When the impeller rotates, a large pressure difference is formed inside the pump body. The low-pressure area of the inlet sucks the slurry into the pump body, while the high-pressure area of the outlet expels it.

The impeller blades are designed to be curved and inclined. When the impeller rotates, the centrifugal force will cause the slurry to rotate rapidly along the direction of the blades. The centrifugal force generated by this rotational movement will push the slurry outwards from the center of the impeller.

Slurry pumps are normally used to pump liquids containing hard particles, such as mineral slurry, coal gangue, etc. In the working process, these particles will be sucked into the pump body through the inlet and enter the pump chamber with the slurry flow. Under the action of centrifugal force, the particles will be pushed towards the wall of the pump chamber and form a layer of solid particles, thus reducing the wear of the impeller and the pump body.

To prevent liquid leakage from the slurry pump and ensure the normal operation of the pump, a sealing device is usually placed between the pump shaft and the housing. The most common sealing methods are packing seal and mechanical seal.

Through continuous rotation and the action of differential pressure, the slurry pump is able to continuously suck the slurry from the inlet and discharge it through the outlet. Slurry pumps are often equipped with discharge pipes to transport the transported slurry to the desired location, such as mines, coal mines, construction sites, etc.

Slurry pumps use centrifugal force to draw slurry containing solid particles into the pump body and push it out by the rotary movement of the impeller to complete the transport process. Its working principle is simple and clear, but in practical applications it needs to be selected according to the specific circumstances, commissioning and maintenance to ensure stable operation and long service life of the pump.
