centrifugal pump 6x8

trash pump exhaust noise

    Beetle-Kill

I've got a little Honda WX 10 4-stroke water pump and I'd like to quiet it down some. I use it to water the lawns and trees, pulling out of my creek. It's pretty quiet now, but I'd love it to be almost silent at WOT. Anyone build a muffler for a little thing like this? Thanks, JB.

not sure how they are built now, but I had a Briggs way back and the exhaust port was threaded. 3/4 pipe I think, so I used a 3/4 nipple and adapted it to a motorcycle muffler I had laying around, very quiet. kind of bulky but did the job.

Can you build a ventilated box around it?

It's pretty close clearance to the plastic cover, so I guess I'll try and add a 6" extension to the exhaust port. Once it's welded on, I'll have some room to play. The secondary muffler is what I'll have to make. Do you think fireproof insulation inside a 4" round tube with some baffles would work?

Too bad you couldn't come up with a way to exhaust below the waterline, like an outboard boat motor. That would quiet it down a lot.

on the job sites we quite often just lean a sheet of plywood or styrofoam insulation up against our pumps or generators to reflect the sound the other direction

    Success, sort of....

Went ahead and grafted on some 1/2 x 1 rec. tube into a new cut out on the muffler, then sealed up the factory outlet. Hodge-podged some exhaust adapters and flex tube. Built a new triple chamber muffler, mounted it on an old wheelbarrow wheel for stability, and welded on a rifle muzzle brake for added flair for the exit. And now.. the motor is louder than the exhaust. Red neck ingenuity. I'll claim success when I build a lil' house for the pump, then have the new muffler outside it and no noise.

Id love to see a picture of it.

I'll see what I can do, never posted a pic. online before.
