Using water transfer pump for fuel

Using water transfer pump for fuel

We are trying to get away from the 12V pumps for fuel transfer in the field. What is needed to convert a transfer pump to handle diesel fuel? Also what pressure would be provided by a 3-5 hp pump at idle or little more with automatic nozzle shutoff? I would like to use a standard 1" hose that we use on the other stationary tanks with the 20 GPM electric pumps. Any ideas would be helpful. Not interested in buying the whole Thundercreek setup.

RE: Using water transfer pump for fuel

I have two semi trash pumps from Northern Tool. 5.5hp Honda. Very reliable. No problem using one inch hose with auto shutoff nozzle. Built last 1000 gal KBH running gear with tank that has baffle. Pull it 60 mph loaded or empty. Fast fill ups! That Honda pump is an 08 model. Don't use banjo style pump.

Proper seals... diesel-resistant. Those alone will be fairly pricey. I think I redid a Banjo for about 150 bucks, but that was a complete 'kit'. The cheapo clear water pumps probably will not have the correct seals..but some digging around should be available. I've done what you asked, and pressure isn't really the thing that makes an automatic nozzle work.. it's the FLOW or speed of the liquid. I've had no problem with the water pump conversion/automatic nozzle.

So what do you recommend for filters? Fill-rite has 40 GPM filters is 10 & 30 micron. Is that enough flow? This will be used to haul fuel to newer equipment with tight specs on fuel. It will suck from bottom of a 500 gallon stainless nurse tank.

RE: Using water transfer pump for fuel

No filter on nurse but 60 gpm 30 micron on 1.5" suction hose hooked to 12000 bulk. 4006 Napa filter on all other tanks to powers units. Tractors has their own.

The Delta I use a triple filter head rated for around 150 gpm. Picked up from my tank distributor. Works well

RE: Using water transfer pump for fuel

I bought a filter and base off eBay for hydraulics. It turns out one of the bases is used on a motor diven air compressor and a C130. Have used it for 5 years and works great. I think it is 10 micron or less. It is pretty big so flow is not a problem.
