Maintenance of Flue Gas Desulfurization (FGD) processes is an important part of power plant operations. Without desulfurization or other scrubbing technologies, emitted flue gases can be filled with unacceptable levels of sulfur dioxide (SO 2), in violation of EPA regulations. A common way to reduce these emissions is to employ wet scrubber operations, using hydrated lime (lime slurries). However, that process results in the scaling of atomization equipment by CaCO3, CaSO3 and CaSO4 (gypsum), which can cause a multitude of issues. Challenges of FGD

When wet FGD processes are adopted, lime slurries cause scaling on many components. This scaling can be a big problem. For instance, when FGD atomizer wheels become scaled their orfices will eventually become clogged. At this point, the wheels have a higher potential for SOx escape into the atmosphere because the lime slurry that reacts with the SOx emission becomes inhibited. Similarly, other associated equipment like the pipes, pumps and grit screens can suffer the same effects.

Costs of Choosing an Incompatible Descaler

Descaling is the next step to an efficient power plant operation,but it offers its own challenges. Some descalers have chemical compositions that are incompatible with FGD equipment metallurgies, especially stainless steel. This can mean serious damage--stress corrosion cracking, crevice corrosion and/or general corrosion of expensive equipment--for example, atomizer wheels cost thousands of dollars.Less compatible and less powerful descalers take longer times to get the job done and descale less efficiently and/or to the level that FGD critical equipment components require.It is not uncommon under a plant shutdown or pause in production that the loss of megawatts otherwise produced will translate to thousands & thousands of dollars lost per minute!
