Slurry pumping involves the transport of solid particles suspended in a liquid, usually water, across various industries such as mining, construction, wastewater treatment and more.

Types of Slurry Pumps

There are three main types of pumps used for slurry pumping: horizontal, vertical, and submersible slurry pumps, each suited to different applications.

• Horizontal slurry pumps, also known as dry-mounted pumps, have their hydraulic end and drive unit located outside the sump. They are versatile, available in various head and flow conditions, and typically utilize standardized motors and seals. In flood-prone areas, dry-mounted submersible pumps may be a better option.
• Vertical slurry pumps are categorized into tank pumps and cantilever/sump pumps. Tank pumps are dry installed, featuring an integrated sump and an open inlet that prevents air blockage for smooth operation. They do not have submerged bearings or seals. Cantilever/sump pumps, on the other hand, are semi-dry with the hydraulic end submerged in slurry while the drive unit remains dry. These pumps can be bulkier, have limited access, and are more susceptible to flooding, making them less favorable compared to submersible options.
• Submersible slurry pumps provide several advantages. They operate directly in the slurry, requiring no support structure, which makes them space efficient. Their integrated design combines the motor and volute for easy installation, and underwater operation minimizes noise. The surrounding liquid cools the motor, allowing for more frequent starts, while their flexible installation options accommodate various configurations. Additionally, they help maintain clean sumps for improved efficiency.
