How to Use the Tomahawk 3-Inch Full Trash Pump: Quick Start & Maintenance Guide

Step 1: Fuel and Oil Check

Ensure the Honda GX240 engine is filled with: 91 octane unleaded gasoline, SAE 10W-30 four-stroke motor oil. Proper fueling is essential for optimal performance and engine longevity.

    Step 2: Connect Your Hoses

Attach the suction hose to the pump’s inlet. Connect the discharge hose to the outlet. Tighten all connections securely. Place the end of the suction hose and strainer into the water source.

    Step 3: Prime the Pump

Unscrew the priming plug on top of the pump. Fill with water to create internal pressure. Replace and tighten the priming plug.

    Step 4: Start the Engine

Ensure the fuel switch is ON and choke is CLOSED. Turn the Honda ignition switch ON. Pull the recoil starter until the engine starts. Gradually open the choke as the engine warms up. Let the engine idle for 3–5 minutes, then adjust throttle to your desired pumping speed.

    Clearing Clogs and Debris

Even if clogged, the pump can continue operating. To clear it, use the quick-release lever to access the volute. For full cleaning or impeller inspection: Turn off and let the engine cool completely. Unscrew the volute knob and turn the cover counterclockwise to open.

    Best Practices

Always use a strainer on the suction hose to reduce large debris intake. Perform regular maintenance checks on the hoses, engine oil, and internal components.
