A 12 volt battery back-up sump pump from Little Giant provides extra protection in the event the primary sump pump (not included) fails, an obstruction in the sump pit blocks flow, the main pump is prevented from operating, a power outage occurs due to storms or any other cause of excess water accumulation in the sump pit. The system also functions as an alarm system if the pump discharge line becomes blocked.
The back-up system is powered by a 12V battery (not included). A controller/charger monitors the battery condition and charges the battery when required. It also alerts the homeowner when the system has operated or when possible flooding conditions exist.
The system uses a high capacity, deep cycle battery (not included) that can provide in excess of 9 hours of continuous operation (using a 140 amp-hour battery) and pump up to 19,000 gallons of water (at 1 ft. head) continuously. Actual operation conditions usually result in intermittent use.
System Includes:
Pump
Controller/Charger
Other Components
Note: recommended battery is a 12V deep cycle marine battery (not included)

You're sitting in your newly finished basement, it's raining, your electricity goes out, and now you worry about water damage because your sump pump is unable to turn on. But, if you have a 12 volt battery back-up sump pump from Little Giant installed you won't need to worry. A battery powered back up sump pump will provide extra protection when the primary sump pump (not included) is prevented from operating. The main pump could fail, an obstruction in the sump pit could block proper flow, a power outage could occur caused by an accident or adverse weather conditions, or any other reason excess water could accumulate in the sump pit.
The back-up pump system is powered by a 12 volt DC deep cycle battery (not included). A controller/charger monitors the battery condition and charges the battery when required. It also alerts the homeowner when the system has operated, or is operating due to a high water condition.
A new fully charged 90 AH high capacity, deep cycle battery (not included) can provide about 1 day of operation assuming the pump has a run cycle of 1 minute on and 4 minutes off. A fully discharged 90 AH battery requires approximately 9 hours to fully re-charge. The 12 volt DC pump must not be drawing power from the battery for the battery to begin recharging.

No power? No battery backup? No problem!
Protect your basement from flooding 24-hours a day with this quality emergency back-up sump pump system. This Zoeller backup sump pump does not use water unless the primary system malfunctions, or in the case of power failure. Water flow is required only when the Home Guard Max is operating and is equivalent to a normal faucet.
Features:
What's in the box:Home Guard ®Max includes the factory-assembled system, a 3/4" x 3/4" FIP push-to-connect fitting to make connecting the unit to Copper, CPVC, or PEX a cinch, as well as two stainless steel hose/pipe clamps to attach the system to your existing discharge pipe.
Model 503
The HOME GUARD®MAX pump by Zoeller Pump Company can be installed as a standby to an electric sump pump. This pump uses water pressure from a garden hose as its power source. The amount of water it will pump varies greatly depending on the water pressure supplied to it.
_The HOME GUARD®requires an uninterrupted water source to operate.
If you have a well pump, the HOME GUARD®will not operate during power outages._
A water check valve, such as a 3/4" brass spring check valve or swing check valve, is required on horizontal drinking water supply lines right before the HOME GUARD ®unit. Some local codes require installing a 3/4" double check valve model instead of a check valve. Because our customers are in all parts of the U.S. we also should mention that some very strict health codes require a 3/4" reduced pressure back flow device. Before installing the water back up pump we recommend that you check with your local governmental bodies regarding permits and back flow laws in your areas. The "best" installation is to use a 3/4" reduced pressure back flow device before the HOMEGUARD ®.
Make sure to follow all of the manufacturer's instructions and directions by performing the proper maintenance and inspections to ensure that you are fully protected from flooding -this is ever-so-important with (man-made) safety devices as they will eventually fail.
Q."How reliable are both of these pumps?"
A.The battery-powered unit is made by well-known Little Giant Pump Manufacturing, a company that's been in business for a very long time. We have sold many of these units, and have not heard of any problems with them. As most people are aware, batteries generally only last 3-5 years. The better the battery is that you install, the more energy and reliability you will have due to the quality of the battery. We recommend you purchase and install the best battery that you can afford.
The water-powered unit is made by Zoeller, another well-respected company that specializes in pumps and related products.
Q."Are there any negatives to installing either of these pumps?"
A.Generally, a backup sump pump doesn't produce as much volume. Also, any pump that sits for a number of years without being used could be stuck (rare but it happens). We suggest you turn on these pumps for a few minutes before each rainy season to make sure all is ok.
Q."What does BCI group 27 mean?"
A.BCI is the abbreviaton for the Battery Council International. They are the primary trade association of battery manufacturers. They have assigned specific group numbers to batteries to corelate to specific physical dimensions of battery cases manufactured. The group numbers define the physical dimensions of the battery case. So if you purchase as "group 27" battery it should fit into the battery case(box) provided with these systems.
Q."What does potential output for the water powered pump consist of?"
A.Output is the amount of water being removed from the sump-pump not including the amount of water being used to operate the pump. The pump uses an equal amount of water input for operation so the actual discharge amount is double the output rating.
For example:
Output rated at: 125 gph
Input amount:
125 gph
Discharge (total) 250 gph
Q."Anything else I should know before purchasing these?"
A.The HOME GUARD ®comes with a water check valve; however, in a number of states, when you're obtaining your permit you may also be required to install a legally approved 3/4" device when connecting the HOME GUARD ®to your water supply. Because potable water is directly connected to the HOME GUARD ®(which could have non potable water in it), many codes and municipalities require an additional, special back flow prevention device be installed. The check valve that comes with the HOME GUARD ®is a type of back flow prevention device, but many municipalities and codes do not recognize that style as "approved". We recommend you check with your local building department and, if required, also purchase a 3/4" from us. We always recommend a double check valve, but if you won't be using one then we hope that you will at least install a quality 3/4" swing or spring .
