Hey there im going to be doing a FASS or Airdog 2 here pretty quick. Is it the best bet to go with a Hellmans Sump Kit or just use the factory pickup. Whats the pros and cons and what are the noticable differences with this?
use the search you should find some info. the factory pickup is not going to provide enough flow if your doing the big fass, the sump is a better route if you want to get as much flow as possible. also, Truck Source Diesel offers a sump that is a little different than hellmans. just to keep your options open.
Yeah i found the thread just below this with info on sumps. I think i will be going with the TSD kit. Thanks!
No problem. They are great guys over there and will take care of ya.
if your doing a big fass it will come with a bigger pickup tube. im sure airdog is the same. a sump is a good idea if you want to spend the cash. your going to drop the tank either way.
Im gonna go with a sump when i get ready to do my fuel system, flows a lot more fuel than the factory pickup from what ive researched.. and like said above your gonna drop the tank anyway so mite as well do a little extra and use a sump..
Deranged performance sells Joe Hellmans sump and its super sweet looking... Thats the one ill be using.
Have any of you guys with sumps ever been DOTd? Around the stock yards they like to dip your tank for red diesel while you're in the auction. It wouldn't be a stretch for them to look at tank config. while they're at it. Anyone ever have trouble?
sump is the best way to go IMO.hellman and tsd both offer nice setups.im goin with tsd its awful purty
Never been dipped but never been to the stockyard either... I dont know of anybody gettin hammered or anything for having a sump..
I would NEVER use any aftermarket fuel system without a sump. I used a 3/4" draw tube on my original fuel system with a Aeromotive pump...had issues with sucking air with anything under 1/3 of a tank. Used it with a FASS 150/180...same problem with anything under 1/4 tank. Installed a Hellman sump, and big Aeromotive fuel pump...ZERO problems at all...I can pull the tank down till the fuel light comes on, and still not suck any air. Technically...the connection is NOT on the bottom of the tank...it is still on the side, so track use is ok. They are worth every damn red cent.
Good Thread... I'm debating also on installing a sump. I have a AD 2 DF-165 that I'm hoping to install within the next 2 weeks. According to Airdog the tank does not have to be pulled and it uses the factory pickup. I don't run my truck below 1/4 tank currently. With the mods in sig and future mods just being studs and upgraded turbo, would a sump be needed???
If you have not "Harpooned" your tank, drop it, do THAT mod, and then put the sump in it. When you pull out the stock sender unit/suction tube, you will laugh at the small 3/8" tube that is used by the factory...so...around a 5/16" inside diameter.
Could some one explain this harpoon mod?
Harpoon mod...... Cutting the blue vent tube abou 1 inch from the top of the tank to allow ~ 7 more gallons in the tank!!! Nothin performance but more fuel can be held one the tank then....
I wish I woulda taken a picture of way I did.... For 40 bucks I made a 5/8 pick up tube... I went to a local hydrolic shop, bought a 5/8 bulkhead fitting, drilled a hole in the top of the sending unit, put the bulkhead in with a washer an o-ring on top, with some rtv, to seal it... Ran a 5/8 rubber hose to the bottom, put a fitting on the end to prevent floating, and called it good!!! Runs great, good to know I won't have to upgrade my p/u tube ever again
The BB mod is just a small bb sandwiched in between the factory regulator spring to raise fuel pressure
So getting back to having a sump... If any road debris was hit and damaged either one of the filters on say an AD or Fass would you then have an uncontrollable loss of fuel until the line was pinched off??? Apologize in advance for the dumb question!
One of my coworkers has run a fass system right in front of his rear tire for the last 4 yrs and never had any problems with this.....his is a work truck and runs back roads all the time.
I plan on doing a Sump with my AD upgrade.
The guys that are running a sump and a FASS or Airdog, are you running stock fuel system infront of the pump to the motor or has most people made there own system. Extended Power, thanks for your help, i am going to be harpooning my tank when i put the sump in rite away also!
I run a sump on mine as well, and its stock height.... I take it 4 wheeling all the time and never had an issue......
If your running an AD, or a FASS, the sump is the way to go. You will not be able to use the last 1/4 or more of your fuel tank without it. I went from filling every 400 miles to filling every 300. It was a PITA. I went with the Hellmann sump. Nothing Joe makes is less than perfect, those that have anything from him know, Joe makes functional Jewelry. LOL We have them on our site and can get them to you quick if your interested.
Mines going to be on it's way today. Went with a TSD sump. The Hellman's looks real nice too! I just decided to go with the anodized black one to match my "theme". I had issues with my FASS levels (ran a 150/180 pump) and after the pumps failing on me enough, I switched to an AD system. Never had a low level issue with the factory hook up they provided. So hopefully the sump will treat me just as well and provide a bit more fuel too.
A side note to the FASS pumps.... I have the 150/180 as well... if you gradually start to lose fuel pressure, try shimming the spring int he return valve, or replace the plastic ball bearing with a 5/8th steel one..... does real well... I shimmed mine to 68 psi, but backed it off to 63 psi. the steel ball bearing will not suck into the spring like the plastic one will.....
