The issue started with a slight rattle. After trying to contact the dealership with no answer, a week later, the car flashed 'Engine overheated - idle engine'. After stopping and restarting, the engine returned to normal temperature. However, the problem became frequent, with additional messages like 'Engine power reduced', 'Change oil soon', and 'Service due'. The water pump had failed, causing the head gasket to go. Another Mokka had the same issue, with a bill over £3,000. Another garage said it needed a new engine and turbo, costing over £6,000 and would never run right, deeming it a write-off.
The bearings in the water pump are of good quality, but the housing expands, allowing the bearings to move incorrectly.
Another user had the same problem, with a bill of £4000, receiving £941 through an extended warranty. A mechanic is working on a 2016 petrol Mokka with a failed coolant pump shaft seal. A 2016 auto model manifested the waterpump problem within 15 miles of leaving the showroom. A 2019 Mokka started with the water pump, then a head gasket, and now a whole engine. A 2017 1.4 Mokka had a coolant leak, a cracked coolant tank, then the water pump, and now the head gasket. A Mokka overheated with a leak, diagnosed as a water pump issue.
