slurry pump expeller 30

Head gasket or water pump failure?

    br0416

Hi. Thank you for taking the time to help first of all. My mum has a 2008 Corsa D 1.4 petrol. We were out in the car and the coolant and oil pressure warning lights came on and the engine began overheating. There was no coolant in the expansion tank however the oil level seemed ok so I assume the oil light came on because of the over heating engine. I filled the coolant back up and it began coming out again in small drips, it appears to be leaking on the ground, near where the aux belt and alternator are located (or at least I think so). Took it to a mechanic who claims to have done a pressure test and said that the head gasket has blown and wants £750 to repair but also said a new engine is probably a better option. Well the car is only worth about £1500 so a new engine is out of the question. If I knew £750 would definitely fix the issue, I’d be tempted to go ahead, however he wasn’t even convinced as a mechanic. The car is driving fine, when it has coolant. The fan kicks in and cools the engine down from between 105-90, which I believe is normal. But as soon as all the coolant has gone, it overheats. As soon as the engine gets up to temperature, coolant loss occurs and within around 20 minutes of driving, the car is over heating. I can see coolant on the ground, there is no white smoke from the exhaust and no milky oil under the filler cap. I am really not convinced it’s the head gasket. From what I’ve been reading, I’m now thinking it’s the water pump. Please could anyone give me their opinions and explain how a novice could identify if their water pump is leaking. Thank you

p.s. another garage told me to just replace the thermostat first but the engine initially cools and the fan kicks in so I don’t think it’s the thermostat?

You need to find out where the leak is coming from. Are you getting lots of steam at the exhaust end or bubbles in the expansion tank? If not its probably not the head gasket, i would take it to the second garage and ask them to do a sniff test i would not take it to the first one again they sound like they are going to rip you off.

So I’ve established it’s the water pump. I’m going to change the water pump and thermostat but I’ve bent a torx bolt when taking the old one off! The bolt below is not in stock with Vauxhall. Anyone know where I can get one?
