einhell dirty water pump low level

Viewing a thread - priming a 6" centrifugal pump

    priming a 6" centrifugal pump

Northwest Illinois Ive got a 30 acre duck pond that has no outlet. I decided to pump it to a drainable area via aluminum pipe. Its a pto pump and no electricity is available. I mounted a honda engine to a vacuum pump to prime the 25 foot suction tube and pump. It worked great yesterday (42 degrees). This morning however, not so lucky. I use a 1/2 clear hose (nh3) to see when its primed-water will begin to fill hose and i can start pto. Today (30 degrees) ice is forming in hose as its priming and begins to build up and eventually lose its vacuum. Does anybody have any ideas. Not a hand primer either. I was thinking about using a 2 inch trash pump (easier to prime) Plumb it into suction tube above pump. Easy fix-wait til tuesday when its in the 40s again.

Faunsdale, AL most likely have a suction leak somewhere. if you can pull a vacuum on the pump and suction pipe and quickly shut off your engine, you will probably be able to hear air leaking in. the 2" pump may be able to handle a large enough volume of air to get it primed if the lift between water level and pump is not too great, but you will need a larger tap into the pump to get that to work.

Re: priming a 6" centrifugal pump

Eastern Kansas like he said probably a suction leak, had a problem with ours, it didnt have a valve so that it wouldn't back flow and it would suck enough air through the discharge hose and wouldn't prime and we just clamped it shut.
