A neighbor's sump pump pit, which receives washing machine discharge via a laundry tub sink, is emitting an unusual odor described as vinegar cole-slaw like. This setup has been in use for 40 years without issue until recently.
One-way trap installation on the sump pump pipe didn't resolve the odor. Bleach usage is limited due to septic tank concerns. Soap and hair buildup in traps could be contributing to the smell. Aeration using an aquarium air pump was suggested. Yeast cakes to promote good bacteria in the septic were mentioned. A complete cleaning of the pit was recommended, focusing on areas above the sump pump's operating range. A failing basin lid seal was suspected. The pit cover is plywood with gaps around pipes. Lint in the washer discharge water could be a factor, suggesting the use of a nylon stocking to catch lint. A mouse falling into the pit was also suggested.
