What is Wire-O Binding?

Unlike spiral binding (which is a coil shape), the metal wire is formed into many small, individual loops. These loops are hooked into the binding holes and mechanically squeezed/clamped together with the "seam" inside the back cover.

Wire-o book binding is second-to-none for formal presentations which need to look professional and attractive. While spiral, perfect and saddle-stitch binding all have their strengths, none quite offer the same versatility and sophistication as a metal wire. And with several colors and tons of sizes available, you can easily customize your wire-bound books to match each project's unique requirements.

Please note that wire-o binding is not recommended for books with high pages counts if readers will be flipping pages all the way around the back 360°, as this may bend the wire binding and cause sheets to come loose. For the most durable book binding which can be flipped 360°, we recommend spiral binding instead.

For wire-o bound books, the binding will go into the page approximately .25". To make sure you don't have any content that goes into or is too close to the binding, we recommend at least a .5" binding margin. If you are worried how the margins on your book will look, we recommend ordering a hard copy proof first before we print all of your books.

If you have page numbers in your file and are printing double sided, it is recommended to have alternating page numbers so they stay on the outer edges of the book. If you have your page numbers all on the left or right side of your pages, then half of the page numbers will be in near the binding of the book making it hard to navigate. For a professional look when printing double sided, alternate the location of the page numbers.

Is wire-o or spiral book binding better?

While spiral binding is typically more affordable and long-lasting, metal wire-o binding offers a visual and touch sensation that can't be imitated. As for which is "better," this often comes down to the overall needs and purposes of your project, as well as personal taste.

Is wire-o bound book printing affordable?

We offer many budget-friendly options across all our printing and binding services. That said, many different variables go into each job's price calculation, so it's hard to generalize which book binding option is most affordable in all cases. But typically, wire-o binding has a lower cost than spiral binding. Compared to perfect binding, wire-o is often (but not always) less expensive.

Binding holes are punched about 0.28" from the binding edge. Align your content from that point to ensure your margins are even and content is centered.

The exact number of pages depends on what paper you choose. On our lightest paper, 300 pages (including covers) can be ordered. Our automated price calculator will inform you if your page count is too high.

Sure! Just choose the next standard size up on the dropdown menu, then click Need a Custom Size and enter your book dimensions. The calculator will update your book price automatically.

In most cases, we do not automatically send a digital proof, so please request this in the notes if desired. In this case, we will send a link to your proof on our website, which displays it like a book — with the pages on the left and right and binding in the middle — so you can make sure everything looks correct with the sequencing and left-to-right orientation.

Yes! Simply click Bulk Mailing on the order form and choose "Mail in Padded Envelopes." Upload your mailing list with your print files at checkout. We will print, bind and mail each book in a padded envelope. Books are typically delivered by USPS within 3-5 business days of us handing them off to them. The exact USPS service used will depend on each book's weight.
