What Pump To Use When Draining Pool?

    AMG

I want to drain my pool, acid wash it and then fix some little issues in the plaster. I have done a lot of research on acid washing, watched videos, etc. I think it will go pretty well. I look at some videos and some posts and see people have use submersible pumps to drain their pool. I just sent a few emails to some local Tool Rental companies in Escondido (San Diego) to see what they have to offer and pricing. Does anyone who has done this before have any good tips that I may need to know when getting a pump? Are there any pumps which can run dry too (like as I am rinsing down the walls, if the pump could pump it out and of course not be completely submerged? Probably not. I can wait till I get a large pool in the deep end and pump that then. I was thinking this is probably a good pump. The 3" trash 110/220V, 130GPM? It would probably take 2 hours or so to drain my pool?

I still have to see what Home Depot rents. How many gpm is acceptable normally? My pool is 15k gallons. Thanks!

Sometimes you can buy a pump cheaper than you can rent one. I bought mine at HD for about $90. It's a bit slow (1/4 hp Flotec 1790 gallons per hour, 5/8" connection for garden hose) but I've used it for partial and full drains; it shuts off when the water drops. If you want something more heavy duty then renting may be the best option.

I'll head to HD tomorrow and see what they have. ~1800 gallons per hour would be fine. I could fire it up the night before and let it pump it out overnight, especially when it shuts off when water drops. That would take about 8-9hrs. no biggy. I wouldn't mind owning one either. Thanks, I'll check out the one you mention tomorrow.

This is the pump I always use. Can set and forget. Won't shut off automatically, but won't burn itself up either if left a reasonable amount of time. Lightweight and simple. Plugs into a 110 outlet. New here, so maybe you this is already common sense to you, but you can also use your system pump on waste or backwash for the largest part of draining, or use both to make it go quicker.

You can find pumps that have a float on them that will auto shut off. I opt for the one home depot rents. 51gpm, works great and hose is never an issue with them. run your hose to plumbing vent pipe in front of or behind your house, code in my area. but don't duct tape it in place or make it a seal, as it could blow back upstream into your sink toilet and bathtub. If you can drain out on to the ground that's fine to but neutralize your pools chlorine, using thi... something, you're pool store will have it 2lbs is plenty. IF you want to avoid draining post back, there are processes you can take that are every bit as effective, and time and cost savings are huge, okay, maybe just time. But I have never had to drain a pool, but did for a customer that wanted it done that way, and I've seen some nasty pools. the advantage you do have to draining is lowering your calcium and cya levels, the later I'm not so concerned with. BTW why drain your pool???

The last thing you want to do is acid wash your plaster, you'll shave three years off the life.. Save your money and replaster down the road! If you want an option to to a drain and refill, Try purifing your pool water. If your interested PM me and I will explain!
