1988 Carrera - Fuel pump relay

1988 Carrera - Fuel pump relay

I have a 88 Carrera that sees mostly weekend duty. This past weekend it cranked but would not start. I suspect it may be the fuel pump relay or the fuel pump. I can't find information on the location of the fuel pump relay. I would appreciate any help.

    DME relay

Call it the DME relay under the drivers seat. Keep a spare as the super cheap one are not reliable.

    DME Relay failure

Do a search here under "DME Relay." These fail because a solder joint fails. The joint fails because the PC board is cantilevered out, with the heavy relay coil on it, from a solder joint. Not a good design. After you get your new relay, and the car is up and running, take the cover off your old one. Resolder those joints. Then get a piece of stiff foam plastic or the like, and shove it in under between the PC board and the relay base. That way the board is now supported, and won't flex up and down.

    DME relay fixed

In fact the DME relay was bad. It took me a while to take the seat out after dropping the reinforcement plates the seat screws attach to. As soon as the new relay was in, the car started right up! I noticed the replacement relay has the bracket slot on a different side than the original (new one is by URO). I had to make a metal angle to support the relay. I will add the foam cushion under the relay to minimize vibration, and will open the old relay to see if I can solder the connections.

    URO relay

I don't want to turn this into a URO bashing thread, but they do not have a high success rate. You may want to keep an eye on it, and purchase an OEM replacement to keep on hand. Also, most here just slide the seat back to provide enough room to replace that relay.

    Foam support for relay

The tip about using some stiffish foam to help these relays requires that you open the relay up - take off the aluminum (or whatever metal it is) cover. Then you stuff foam between the printed circuit board on which the actual relay coil sits and the base under this printed circuit board. It is the board, with its heavy coil, that you want to support.
