Centrifugal pumps use a rotating impeller to move water into the pump before discharging it. The impeller creates a vortex, using atmospheric pressure to take water from the outside and make it rise through the pump. Submersible pumps, on the other hand, are entirely submerged. They lower the groundwater to remove water from a deep sump before pumping it elsewhere.
The most common use of water pumps is to transfer or remove water from dams, wells, swimming pools, shallow flooded areas or basements. They’re also commonly used for irrigation on agricultural properties.
Petrol water pumps are generally more cost effective than diesel and are ideal for small-scale agricultural, construction and residential pumping needs. Diesel water pumps, on the other hand, are more fuel efficient and typically better suited to longer run times. Powered by sunlight, solar water pumps are environmentally friendly and have significantly lower operating costs. They’re also much quieter to run than petrol or diesel pumps and cater to a range of residential, commercial and agricultural pumping requirements. Pumps are typically rated in litres per minute or hour. So, consider how much water you want to move in a certain amount of time. For example, a 100L/h pump would take 150 hours to empty a 15,000L pool. If you need to pump water uphill from a dam to your property, you’ll also want to consider how hard the pump can push water vertically. This lift is typically measured in metres.
