The CV Division, the Drainage Services Department, Binnies Hong Kong Ltd and the Kwan Lee and Chun Wo Joint Venture jointly organised the captioned visit on 22 July 2023.
The event began with a warm welcome by the organisers. The participants were then given an informative introduction on the project, including the construction of a submarine outfall by Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD) and innovative measures adopted in the project. The participants had a tour of the site after the presentation.
The project involves the construction of a secondary sewage treatment works at San Shek Wan in South Lantau, a sewage pumping station at Pui O, plus 1.4 km long twin submarine outfalls with an outer diameter of 350 mm for disposal of treated effluent from the project, and finally the construction of about 5.3 km of village sewage system and ancillary works along South Lantau Road, Chi Ma Wan Road and at Pui O Lo Uk Tsuen.
The outfall is constructed by the HDD method to minimise dredging and other construction activities in the water. It is located approximately 60 m below the seabed and constructed by a 2-way forward drilling operations on both the land and sea sides.
The feedback from the visitors was positive, with many expressing how much they enjoyed and learnt from the visit. They appreciated the opportunity to see the setup and the construction plant for the HDD works, the innovative measures and learn about the engineering principles behind them. The visit was also a great opportunity for them to have a better understanding of how a public works project could benefit the community as well as the environment.
The visit was a success, and the organisers were thrilled to have the opportunity to showcase the San Shek Wan project in person. The physical site visit provided attendees with a unique opportunity to learn more about the project and acquire a deeper understanding of the engineering involved from a first-person perspective.
