Overview

Sand, gravel, and crushed stone are produced in mines and quarries for many different uses. Often used as construction material, aggregate such as sand, gravel, and crushed stone can be mixed with other materials to make concrete, mortar, asphalt, or used unblended as ballast, fill, and road cover.

Aggregate extraction processes use large quantities of water. After extraction, the raw minerals may be subject to processes such as crushing, milling, washing and chemical treatments. Large amounts of water need to be handled as a normal part of mineral processing, including wastewater, water for equipment cooling, wash operations, dewatering, and stormwater runoff.
