Field Fence Installation Guide

Field Fence Installation Method – End Posts, Middle Posts & Wire Mesh

Field fence is the most ideal wire fence for farm and ranch uses. It has 3 parts that need to be assembled: end posts and cross members, middle posts, and wire mesh. One of the middle posts can be all wood or in the form of metal T posts mixed with wooden posts. Below we list the field fence installation method for your reference.

    Preparation List

61" high wooden posts & T posts, Gloves, Steel wires, Three 8' high cross members, Shovel, Hammer, 36" high wire mesh roll, 3/8" drill bit, Nails, Wooden boards, Brace pins, Wire joiners, Stick, Pliers, Wire tensioning tool, Post driver, Chains, Fencing stretching board, V clips

    Post Installation

    End Posts & Cross Members

Step 1: Locate the installation position. Step 2: Dig in every post hole about 25" in depth. Step 3: Place two 61" high wooden posts loosely into the holes with 8' spacing between them. Step 4-1: Drill a hole in the top of the side of the post with a 3/8" drill bit. Step 4-2: Drill holes in 2 ends of the 8' high post center used as cross member with 3/8" drill bit. Step 4-3: Drill a hole in the 2 nd end post at the same height as the 1 st end post hole with a 3/8" drill bit. Step 5-1: Nail a 3/8" × 10" brace pin in the 1 st end post. Step 5-2: Nail a 3/8" × 10" brace pin in the 2 nd end post in the opposite direction. Step 6: Install a cross member and then hammer brace pins tightly. Step 7: Get 2 boards to place under the 2 posts on one side separately and cover with dirt. Step 8: 3 end posts and 2 cross members at the other end are installed to show completion, refer to steps (1–7). Step 9: Get 1 long steel wire and connect its ends together with a wire joiner to form a loop. Step 10: Wrap the wire loop around one side end posts diagonally. Wire loop on the other side is installed the same way. Step 11: Tighten the wire joiners on both sides so that the wire loops fit against the end posts, and then cut the excess wire with pliers. Step 12: The installation of the wire loops is complete and details are shown. Step 13: Fix one nail on the top and middle of each of the 2 posts with wire loops on both sides with a hammer.

    Middle Posts

    All Wooden Posts

Step 1: Repeat the previous steps (1–3) of the end posts for installing the 61" high middle posts. Step 2: Mark the stick, then take the stick and compare the height of each post to see if they are on the same level. Step 3: Pour dirt into the holes and tamp them down. Step 4: Count 2 posts and put a nail in the top and middle of the third post, and so on. Step 5: Wrap 2 wires around the 2 nails of one end post until they wrap around the nails of the other end post.

Wooden + Metal Posts (Excluding end posts, the first 2 posts are metal posts, 1 wooden post after every 2 metal posts.)

Step 1: Repeat the previous steps (1–3) of the end posts to install the wooden and metal posts in the holes. Step 2: Fix T posts with a post driver. Step 3: Mark the stick, then take the stick and compare the height of each post to see if they are on the same level. Step 4: Pour dirt into the holes and tamp them down. Step 5-1: Install 2 V clips on T posts depending on end post nails position by placing Vs through the horizontal wire after the mesh's installation. Step 5-2: Wrap the V clips around T post and the other V through the same horizontal wire of the wire mesh after the mesh's installation. Step 6: Wrap wires around 2 nails of one end post and through the nails and V clips until they wrap around the other end post's nails.

    Fence Installation

Step 1: Unroll the 36" high wire mesh close to the posts. Step 2: Place one end of the wire mesh through the end post. Step 3-1: Cut 3–4 vertical wires from the wire mesh that goes around the post, leaving enough room for horizontal wires to wrap around. Step 3-2: Wrap the horizontal wires around the wire mesh on the opposite side of the post to allow the whole mesh to wrap around the post. Step 4: Install a fencing stretching board at the other end of the wire mesh and insert its wedges into its ferrule, and fix it with a hammer. Step 5: Install 2 chains and 2 steel wires on the end post near the fencing stretching board, and then tension them tightly with wire tensioning tools. Step 6-1: Cut 3–4 vertical wires from the wire mesh that goes around the post, leaving enough room for horizontal wires to wrap around. Step 6-2: Wrap the horizontal wires around the wire mesh on the opposite side of the post to allow the whole wire mesh to wrap around the post. Step 7: Cut off the excess wire mesh and remove the fencing stretching board and wire tensioning tools. Then the other end fixation is complete. Step 8: Field fence installation is complete.
